seventy-six damn years old
birthday next April
will make me a year older
drat . . . I'm
still trying to push words around
finding it more difficult
these days
hunched over the keyboard
pulling up the past
anything to not think about the future
sometimes I believe I gotta lot of nerve
to do that
the old gray matter
destroyed by
the mean streets
and those who populated those streets
but I found love there
I've peered from behind iron bars
I've been right at home at
sawdust floor juke joints
I saw a man beat into a comma
with pool cues
New Orleans alley
harsh price to pay
for cheating
he called for his mother
at the end
when he knew he was done for
part of my life
painted by blood
I have much to draw from
when I write
my poems
the novels and short stories
hasn't been all bad
there have been good times
even so
dark clouds always seemed to hover around
whenever I think of them
but writing's what I do
even when words refuse to come
maybe tonight
they will come

Reality hurts sometimes, Jerry I have had quite a dose of it myself at times and I know what you mean about the birthdays. I have 72 coming right up in March.

Thank you, Ida, for somewhat relating to my poem today. It's just one of those things that grabs you every so often when you look and see where you are going in life . . .

"when I write

And that is "Keeping On, Keeping on"

Nice write, bud!

I hear what you're saying, JL, and as I said in my poem, and you quoted, they aren't all bad for sure. Thank you very much.

You have aligned yourself in this poem with Willie, and Whalon, and the boys...and to me that is a good thing...I'm sure they are still writting their lives out on scraps of paper...your life has turned out much like theirs, but without high fame, or spotlight.

keep writting

I thank you kindly, Ice for your thoughts which put me with the greats of country music. I am amazed that you would think that way of me and again I thank you.

Hey Jerry!
I get where you're coming from.
Seen a lot myself in my lifetime.
Just like you explain, some good some bad.
You're right, life is a precious gift and
we feed off all the experiences.
Learning, learning, always learning not
wanting to stop.
I don't think you're anywhere near pulling
in the reins and stopping. Age will never stop you, you're not that way.
I've read enough of your work to know that.
You're a fighter writer. A lot of the time battling yourself but always finding a way
to win the battle.
Write on brother you still have lots to offer.

Eric, Eric, what a wonderful comment you have given me, and I thank you so very much for it.

The roads and pitfalls we travel through life are one and the same within our souls. We find
and decipher what we need and the experiences become us.

Thank you so much again, Eric.
