Ads are selling bottled beauty saving schemes for your funeral I switch channels; pointless They’ve anticipated my clicking finger A smiling orange faced doll Wants to laser burn my eyes ~ I hear myself sigh With the old dog following We wander out to the garden While the TV sells insurance To the empty room ~ Catching a gust of summer wind The spiral clothes line begins to spin Sensible shirts, frilly frippery Dance on the plastic carousel Oh damn, the lawn needs a cut ~ Back to the armchair Mr Darcy takes Elizabeth in his arms I’m glad someone is having a good time Sophie’s tail quivers I cast Jane Austin aside A key sounds in the lock ~ Children’s cries chase away the boredom Kisses “Have you missed us Daddy?” “Of course not” I lie Later: honeyed ham, cream on strawberries I love Summer Sundays, Don’t you? |

Ahhh . . . What a very raw and plain picture you have given us with your words, Cari. I remember those kind of days as I grew up. Still, as you pointed out there were times, good times. Even so, there still there was not much fun at my house. ~ If they give you ruled paper, write sideways. ~ |

Yeah we sure are inundated with Ads of all sorts. Same ones over and over and yes, it gets boring for sure. However, you've captured the slow laid back feeling of summer Sundays. The kids always liven up a place don't they? I have two grandkids but I find them so refreshing and after the day is done I can even give them back now days. Love the idea of that meal at the end, especially strawberries and cream for the finish.......yum! Very enjoyable read. true love never looks after it's own interests |

I agree with all that is said about the culture of television..but the last stanza brought me back, and away from the stupid clown car adds, played over and over on private tv stations.. "Children’s cries chase away the boredom Kisses “Have you missed us Daddy?” “Of course not” I lie Later: honeyed ham, cream on strawberries I love Summer Sundays, Don’t you?" Reminds me of the love that Longfellow wrote about in "The childrens hour" "They almost devour me with kisses, Their arms about me entwine, Till I think of the Bishop of Bingen In his Mouse-Tower on the Rhine!" Thank you for the poem. "Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance." |
