I clasp my hands in the time-honored way,
Watch the summer heat ripple on pavement,
An eye out for the occasional storm,
Which usually comes in the afternoon,
Lazy days, the heat drains me where I sit,
I think of today and the days before,
Events taken place in long ago times,
Should be a reference for us today,
Learn from the past, don't make the same mistakes,
Millions of lives have died to pave the way,
And show us the blunders we made back then,
But the seekers of a new way of life,
Disembowel those perilous days of yore,
Where masses were grouped together as one,
Looking to the State for all of their needs,
Father Government and Mother Welfare,
Treat them like the children they have become,
No one will stand tall and say it's enough,
Instead they stand in the bread lines, heads bowed,
Thankful for crumbs where they ought to be loafs,
Universal care murders the old ones,
No such thing as an individual,
Merely sheep bleating, but not very loud,
Toward a dismal end, potters field awaits.

Sadly, where we should be reading tea leaves,
We have mock tea parties as they laugh at us.

Jerry we are in synch this morning. I have been reading the old Testement and it is all so discouraging to read the same and clearly told stories continuing on and on. Will we never learn as we once told out r children,
"We have to learn to get along together". No more "eye o for an eye and tooth for a tooth." and  barbaric "beheadings".  Then I just read a story based on politics and the Iran Contra scandal we were into with Iran when a
"few bureaucrats and a gang of free lance old hands drawn to a counter revolution and channel deals to supply arms to Iran. to support the Contra Rebels"  Which brought me back to Stanley and his son Prescot Bush and the arms deals and supplies to Germany. It never ends. I have to leave and get out to the yard ans smell the roses hoping they o  have not also rebelled. best to you from a fading self, jo

Jo, you are far from being a "fading self," you are on top of everything which is going on in this crumbling world. I will agree wholeheartedly that is seems each succeeding generation basically commits the same kind  of boondoggling repeating itself over and over and . . . You are right, it is sickening and I think I'll take my little pooch and  for a ride. Thank you for you wonderful comments . . .

I think this mentality thrives as people think the Government is concerned about them and place their trust in the Government and not their God...james

You never pass up a chance to push your "God!" do you James. Stay off of my site if you can't control your feelings, I do NOT need them here.

Your poem title with the tea leaves made me dig up my old amateurish poems. One with reading tea leaves, but on a different tangent from yours. Though the meat of your poem makes me just say, "life is complicated" and though I care very much these things that are happening, the hopelessness of it all is so sad. Really, and I admire you for caring enough to say it in a poem

JerryPat2, Right on target with this,
sadly this seems to be the pattern.

Poignant writing.

Appreciate you thoughts on my poem, jjote, and yes there are times when I just need to let it all hang out, this was one  off those times.

I agree, rainyday, it does seem to be a pattern, and one which needs to be broken. Thank you for being here.
