Competition is for Horses "Ever been to a horse race?" When I lived in Long Beach, and suddenly I realize that was about seventeen years ago, I went to Los Alamitos Race Track on a few occasions; where they had harness racing, where I knew absolutely nothing about picking winners; I did know a friend that worked there, so that was part of my excuse to go; at that time, one of the guys at work was so addicted to gambling especially the horse racing kind and he eventually lost his house, the wife wasn't too far behind; anyway I was young and impulsive so I visited Los Alamitos a few times to test my luck and bravodo, so one day I bet a small amount of money on nothing but a longshot and the horse won and I took home some cash that night but in my heart betting on horses wasn't my style and I knew I could never get rich betting on losers. A very interesting experience ) And the ending is brilliant and, I'd say, philosophical. I never was addicted to gambling and have never attended any races, but I invested my money in different projects, and so I know something about the subject ) Although it takes more time to give a chance to someone's business (and for years, not for minutes, you don't know for sure if he is a loser or a winner). Thank you for the poem, James!) |
