Should we prefer the dawn or candlelight? Alone and damp with dew I sit and watch the shadows retreat in the valley like a tablecloth sliding from its setting rows of trees revealing themselves the woodgrain on our table for two scratched and pocked from years of use but charming like the flicker in your eyes they held me still even when our words floated down the stream glistening now abruptly as the hillsides ignite how rarely we get to see for miles in all directions with only a hint of fog on the glass of our favorite haunt deserted and dark now between sittings waiting to be retransformed with soft light and small talk I wonder which of the two places is real? I pull my face from the window a scientist looking up from his microscope to feel the first full sun standing I set off down a well worn path dreaming of my favorite sunsets |
