https://soundcloud.com/diana-van-den-berg-2/writing-poetry-in-the-dark silhouette of feline elegance and canine paws on windowsill hypnotising chorus of epauletted fruit bats not a breath of wind stirs the trees shapes of furniture loom out of the gloom in shades of oldworld browns and shadowed greys and background black kitty food bowl shines silver-bright on dressing table invisible dove-grey seascape emerges from my memory time crawls the walls in patterns painted by the moon and I reach for respite out of scrambled stress and slowly slip into ponderings of thises and thats and why’s and hows and the night embraces me and invites my mind into dark-night forest-dance I acquiesce and peace pervades my being I float on nothingness and work guilt rides away on gentle thermals and . . . ah the light returns and wipes out the dark and reveries and dance are gone as if they never were. . . kettle on for tea Owl |

I was there and even saw the extra tea cup put out for me. Thank you for this morning respite. Jo |

I think that is what we call a brown-out or a rolling black-out here. My electricity was out for a couple of hours the other day because of the rain but it doesn't happen often. You certainly wrote a fine poem about it. I should have thought of that. Ida |

It is not a problem, Ida, that you asked, in my load-shedding poem. I was glad of the opportunity to explain it. We also, in the year 2008 (though somebody said 2000 recently, so it may have been then) when it first started, needed to have it explained to us. It is so frustrating because I can't do any work, and I can't even make a cup of tea! Thank you for your kind words about my poem. Owl |

I'm most glad to re-read this 'slice-of-life' write again, 'painted' in such fine imagery! I am especially fond of the line: "time crawls the walls in patterns painted by the moon" |

Atmospheric and inspiring. So much so, that I'll put out the light, and feel the feel. |

Thank you for your lovely words, Redstart, and for feeling the poem so much that you want to turn out the light to feel it better. ![]() Owl |

Thank you, Michael. The darkness was imposed on me by South Africa's load-shedding of electricity when I should have been working, so it took me a while to accept the situation. ![]() Owl |

Never had imposed darkness other than from storms...always have batteries and flashlights on hand just in case, though. I loved the same lines as Bruce: "time crawls the walls in patterns painted by the moon" I can picture this feeling. M |

Thank you for your kind words, Maureen. The only torch I have is a tiny little pinlight from my cellphone (if the phone is sufficiently charged, and I keep that for emergencies). Owl |
