Ugly I’ve searched for beauty in a tree, It must be something I can’t see. I’ve searched for beauty in the stars, But I might as well be on mars. ‘Searched for beauty in works of art, (Truest gifts of an artist’s heart); But in a world consumed by dark, Beauty’s but myth, and your its mark. I’ve searched for love, found only pain; Though carried it like ball and chain Across the desert’s burning sand, In search of one to understand. I’ve searched for love in human eyes, Only to find it’s a disguise Used to trap other hearts in haunt, And leave their souls ever in want. The truth is I’m an ugly man Just getting by the best I can; But I live in this ugly world, An ugly destiny unfurled. Where some say beauty’s in the eye, Till they’re convinced of their own lie. Working their will upon the soul, Where love and beauty both take toll. Cut out my eyes so I can’t see The tricks that they have played on me. Remove my heart, so I can’t feel Longings for what I know’s not real. Then, tell me all I am to you, And I will show you what is true. For spurning dignity’s easy, Resigned to being just ugly. I see you as a poet first and foremost. Your poem is harsh and by the looks of your picture... you are so not an ugly man. Quite the contrary...and that's all I have to say about that. ![]() |

I love this . . . quote: As far as the rest of the poem, I can relate. Not now in my present state of mind, but I have certainty have been where you are. I can only hope that you will find what I found (not religion) soon and set your mind at ease. ~*~ Tell the truth, but tell it slant.--Emily Dickimsom ~*~ |

"I’ve searched for love in human eyes, Only to find it’s a disguise Used to trap other hearts in haunt, And leave their souls ever in want." Ugly? Ugly is hate, I don't see that in you, and your poetry has a special sort of antiqueness to it. Great job, my friend. Never mind ugly. I thought this had real beauty. We can't defeat what is reality. We can know ourselves, and step apart from the mad ness. Somewhere, inside, lies the answer for the individual. Sadly, it can never be transfered . I think Jesus tried, and failed. A deep and touching poem. |

Sorry it has taken me so long to chime in here I'm on vacation. I can understand the feeling. But we are always judging ourselves harder than we judge others (as the other responses will attest) The only one who you have convinced of your ugliness is you. It is a hard view to reverse. Sometimes just plain logic dictates ugliness cannot spawn beauty. The beauty of your words is well known in this here blue place. Lori ![]() |

Yeah, along with all the others, I have known several physically beautiful folk who were some of the ugliest people I've known --- and if you're truly referring to yourself here, that's your personal vendetta (bet the other person in your avatar doesn't think you're ugly!), and you have to live with it. But, based on your writings (and pic) I be willing to bet you're not near as ugly as this would represent (and no, I wouldn't kiss you!!) LOL Anyway ... much enjoyed the read as usual my friend... jimmy |

BluesSerenade, I was speaking more of an “ugly on the inside” here. I tend to write most my poems from a first person vantage point, but I have seen many people who have parts of themselves they just do not care to have. On the other hand I have seen many things in this world that are just so painted up and decorated to bring pleasure to the human eye, that all seem to have an ulterior motive. Thus, the “cut out my eyes” line. If I can learn to live with the “ugly” I see in me, simply by not focusing on it and realizing there’s a whole lot of it out there going around, and on a much worse level, well then anyone can. What I have, both inside and out, I am perfectly content with. The last stanza is aimed at those people who paint false pictures of themselves, and do nothing but cause others pain in the process. Thank you for the compliments, btw. ![]() JP, lol at the “not religion” statement. Rest easy, bud. I am doing pretty good actually these days. JL, hate is the last thing you’d ever find in me, if it were possible to find in me at all… It’s good to hear that from you. Redstart, quote: We can delude ourselves about what we see in ourselves… that is what this poem is about. Not seeing reality for self-delusion. i.e. accepting yourself as a whole for not just seeing the parts of you that you do not like. Most of us are our own worst judges. Lori, you hit it all on the head. ![]() Jo, well, those deeds come from somewhere though. You undoubtedly have a cleaner vantage point, assuming that the ugly a person sees in themselves stems from conscience. Thank you for your kind words. ![]() Mvvenkataraman, I am glad you enjoyed. Thank you all for the replies. Michael |

Ah, jimmy, you snuck in one me there... not so much about me as personalizing something I see in a lot of people. And definately refering to the inside. Thank you, and lol at the *kisses. Michael |
