In simple steps, like wind talking like skin walking like running ridges in rain, each life presents for us its choices all to sort again; too many tears shed, too many voices each unraveling a thread toward too many fears like shadow monsters fed on bold ideas, still we dream of love and peace and happiness. Am I blest to see life's true simplicity; or is it just that I have finally broken, shattered by elemental increments of pain and strife, that day by day became sum and product of a life? ©2012 icebox |

I feel like you are blessed, Ice. I would say that as we age we acquire the ability to "see" the simplicity in the human adventure, but I don't think it has anything to do with age. Although we do see things in a much different light as we grow older without the fires of testosterone and whatever "quest" we have embarked on during out lifetime, the ability to understand the simplicity within us has more to do with how we perceive our fellowman than anything else, I feel. Simplicity. It has a good sound to it. A simple sound with just the faintest ringing of tiny bells. Okay. I'll hush. ~*~ Death is a common weed: requires no rain. ~*~ |

Well, not knowing how long it took you to "to see life's true simplicity", I would say, for most folk, age does play a large part because not only is age a sum total of experience, but and maybe more important because experience doesn't necessarily make us wiser, most also gain a certain wisdom with age. . . so blessed, yes, especially since you've lived long enough to age, but age also. Relying on the wisdom of the elders was not a chance occurrence... j. |

I could certainly have used some of the wisdom I have now 40 years ago and I think the loss of simplicity in everyday life isn't doing us any good. Always follow your poetry...wherever it goes, Mr. Ice. Ida |

As always, when I am so fretful and don't know what I'm hungry for, I can count on going to the icebox, and stand in the light, so transfixed at the abundance inside, I forget I'm hungry. ![]() |

Ice, wisom doesn't come without it's wounds because we learn from our mistakes. As we get older I think we learn what we can live with out. And then there are some people who just never grow up no mater how old they get... Excellent write ![]() Lori |

Your use of words and the wisdom in the message is true. Taking "simple steps", to lead a " dream of love, peace, happiness". Thank you for your poem, Ms. E |

icebox, in what appears an "easy" poem cast a shadow over my thoughts and I pondered this, and enjoyed the journey, from when you wrote it, to now, and will probably continue to do so. ![]() |

I tend to believe there is no simplicity we can be happy with...nothing good is simple... we are broken ![]() |

It is a blessing indeed to see life's simplicity. Truth, beauty, happiness are all rooted in love and we are able to see the simplicity of this heavenly law, when we absorb it with an unencumbered spirit. It's the difficulty of doing so that makes everything complicated. ![]() Thank you for this thought provoking and beautiful piece of poetry. Margherita |

Hello Charly...It's always good to read your thoughts. I like your simple steps that do not sound simple at all. (wind talking, skin walking, running ridges in the rain) I can only do those things in poetic thought. Yet I wouldn't be surpised to see you hopping a cloud or two. I will always dream of love and peace and happiness and feel blessed to have felt it. Yes, you are blessed. |

Who knew that other's thought about this, yet never put it out in a poem. It was wonderful reading it. It was fine indeed. |

I don’t feel that seeing the simple things in life is a particular blessing of one of a certain age. I have been blessed with that insight all of my life. Even as a child. I remember so many beautiful moments that easily block out the many hard deals handed out by just living. I easily become gleeful over the showing of a scene of nature. A violet standing proud and tall among the weediest looking blades of grass on an unkempt lawn, peeking out as if to show all is not as it seems. A spider’s web on a clear morning glistening within the morning’s dew; A small Sunflower bravely heaving itself up between the curb and the gutter on a dirty neglected street. These small gifts are cherished and held in my memory even to this day. An unfamiliar dog following me on a morning’s walk and so friendly that I spoke inviting words and almost heard an answer. These gifts and… many more Some years ago while walking in the woods I came upon a bright sunny space with an old time stonewall built many years ago. I sat and looked around pondering about who might have built that wall; I sat until the tears flowed at the lost memories held within that area. I left and never returned. It was enough to carry the memories of a pleasant day and leave my thoughts and tears to blend in with the thoughts of whomever lived and built the wall. The day I wandered down to the waterside and watched a young boy having a wonderful afternoon looking for crabs. To listen to an eight or nine year old boy explain how to know if the crab was too young to keep or if it was a female carrying young ones and watch him throw it back into the water, as “it was the law” he said. To be taught by a youngster any thing like that is always a joy. To see again within my mind’s eye our young son come back from the small mountain in our area tenderly holding a frog with a smile on his face as he held it out and shared his afternoon hunt with me. I can go on. A walk, a quiet place, the woods, the water’s edge, the camping trips we took, so many bring precious memories that I recall so easily. As life goes on I still rejoice at an unexpected flower blooming in the yard the occasional surprise visits from an Indigo Bunting or the painted Bunting, that only grace our yard once in a while, a child’s visit. It is the simple things that truly make a life. If we can forget the hurts, the neglect once felt and lived through and remember the slices of life that really mattered we can still smile. jo |
