         The Snow Listener

For an inveterate snow-listener
and devotee of the storm,
there is no greater joy,
if only for a few fleeting
and precious moments of
   the ‘now,’
then when the magnificent
sound in all the land is silence,
and the only ceaseless motion
is the gossamer dance of flakes
in lovely random arabesques,
until the hard-edged world of men
melts into the pristine and formless
sparkling beauty of the Winter
   twilight.

Sometimes the closest to 'true' silence can be in the depth of a cold, winter night, when all alive is hiding from the cold, all sound muffled by the absorbing blanket of soft, fresh snow - and the stillness as an inside of a sheltered, crystal vase.

That kind of silence is precious indeed.

One of my favorites of your many beautiful poems, dear Bruce, because you render that special hush of snow masterfully.

The sound of snow is my favorite.  Even in a whiteout the wind may howl but the snow only whispers. You made me long for the flakes to fall this morning.

Love this poem, Bruce. I have fond memories of playing in the snow as a child. Winter days can be so beautiful.
