everyday the old man
opened the only door in his room
and allowed the dog to go ahead of him
he followed and closed the door
as if worried about intruders
there wouldn't be any
he should know that by this time
maybe he was becoming somewhat addled
he'd been here a long time
a very long time
sometimes he thought it was a dream
sometimes
but he knew it wasn't
the dog's name was Scooter
he'd named all his dogs Scooter
the six foot by fifty foot dirt walkway
no grass
it had been walked so much
however many years he had been there
it was about eight inches deep
in the beginning he'd tried to dig out of it
with his bare hands
they hurt him for that
the second time too
on the third try they took him to a place
opened up his skull
and did things to it
he no longer had the desire to dig out
he hadn't seen another human
since the time they did something to his brain
that had been a long time ago
he didn't know why he was there
he didn't know why they kept giving him a dog
to keep him from going insane
he guessed
so he would feel the pain of isolation each and every day
he vaguely remembered
three Scooter's including this one
he remembered dogs lived ten to fifteen years
he'd had three
thirty to forty years he'd been there
Scooter whined
he was hungry, probably thirsty
so was the old man

Sometimes your poetry takes me places I don't want to to go to, but it is so much filled with the human spirit in both triumph and in this sweet story of man and dog's shared pain

I'm sorry Emma, that my poetry takes you to distasteful places. Really I am.

No need to apologize. If anything I apologize
to imply that I don't like it, I actually do very much. I just mean that I feel badly when someone hurts, if that makes sense. Not that I had a painfree life either, I guess I write more fluffy stuff these days

Hah! I understood where you were coming from, Emma, I just wanted to tell you I hated bumming you out sometimes. I do write gritty poetry most of the time. Thank you for always reading and commenting on my poetry.

It's a terribly tragic story, Jerry.
Is it real?
