I recall sitting on the porch,
it was really hot, it did scorch;
the dream was all about Nanette,
          and I owe Nanette a great debt.

It was dusk, the porch light was on,
Patricia and Nick played in the lawn;
I pushed the swing that we sat in,
          she said something that made me grin.

I leaned over to whisper low,
something sweet that would make her glow;
she disappeared, the children too,
          in their place my debt overdue.

such heartbreak in a family's breakup, yet you speak of sweet fondness amid the heart pangs

Oh, there is a sweet fondness as you said, Emma, but it is overshadowed by grief I'm afraid.

You have written often and well enough about this subject that however much you have forgiven yourself it still pains you even in the midst of your fondest memories.
I have always admired about you that you are willing to bare your imperfections in heart wrenching excellent writing

You are right, Lori, I still have pain and grief about what happened, but it doesn't consume me like it used to. I still write about her and the children and probably will until the day I am no more, but as hard as it is to understand I have made peace with it.

You are right. I guess it is easy for me to be pollyannaish, from the peanut gallery.
Grief is real knife, and will mutilate that sweet fondness. Sorry you have this in your life.

Emma, you had it right in the first comment. It's like I told Lori, I still have pain and grief about what happened, but I have made peace with myself. Please believe me, I wasn't being judgmental on your comment.
