you realize
your edges have slowly left you
it's impossible to tell apart
your character fibers have become uneven
and that leaves you
like a tattered nonentity
blinding you to who you are
who you were
your thoughts have given up on you
even hearing has taken on a different tone
you're listening to gibberish
unable to differentiate moments in time
sounds are your enemy
you find yourself gasping for air
your heart beating irregularly
pumping cement
dreaming of blood, red blood . . .
you somehow
find a way to put yourself back together
like a movie shown backward
you begin to settle down with relief
feeling peaceful
for stability has returned
you are whole again
but . . .
when  you again face reality
where your edges have slowly left you
and it's impossible to tell apart
your character fibers have become quite uneven . . .

Interesting concept JP. The more I read it the more layers of meaning I discover.
Good write!

Well, Lori, life itself is a multifaceted ordeal. I guess in this poem I was trying to get across the concept that we can move ourselves in the direction of being at peace within, but you have to stay on guard because old troubles keep coming around to taunt and disturb us.

peacefully on guard...hmmm.

I've never seemed to quite manage that particular skill.

But there is nothing left to do but try, right?

Enjoyed.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting on my poem, Lady Goodman. I meant "feeling peaceful" to be after I had collected myself and everything was calm, only then did I feel peaceful.

We are truly helpless, aren't we Emma? In matters of our destiny most of us merely flounder along.
