Michael's Fault (Memorial Day 2013)

Michael's Fault

My dad (WWII)
knew the war
on board ship,
saw his mates
get blown apart,
from ordinance
of our own making,
when dropped,
mishandled.

No purple heart
to the family,
no words about
"service to country",
just some mutterings
about being lucky
no one else was killed.

Sort of like
our government
putting our kids on trial,
in jail, or worse,
for civilian casualties
in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan.

Like it's their fault
those people
don't wear uniforms,
hide, and are accepted
among their own,
and can kill, or maim
us, at their whim,
yet scream bloody hell
if one of theirs gets hurt.
Thank God they are there
and I am here,
because I would definitely
shoot first
without discrimination
as to age, height, sex
or status.

A friend of mine died
the other day,
shot by what
looked like a civilian,
among women and children,
dressed
just like them,
then ran away.

I'll be surprised,
if I don't hear,

It was Michaels
fault,

Not Theirs.

And we're fortunate
no one else
was hurt.

Memorial Day, 2013,
and our boys are dying,

for What?
