Scarecrow October morn and autumn mist and winter chills afar Sunlight's fingers dance on the pond and Merlin's wands cast spells Reflecting in the tranquil pool your thoughts so very deep And magpie watching flies away, your secret he soon tells And surely then the sun did rise its warmth upon your face Your shadow long across the field a scarecrow tries to smile His clothing worn and rooks to roost to watch the seasons change Come stand with me in morning hush, together for a while And apples fall in coloured tones to lie upon the grass Uneaten fruit and wasps pursuit and cider days to come An English vale with sunlight pale so warm within your heart As eyes grow dim these things remain, beneath the setting sun Remember me when I am gone and watch the morning sun For I am there within the rays my smile in dappled trees My spirit plays in waterfalls my voice upon the wind So close your eyes and you will see, just as the scarecrow sees |

Like Ruth, I love the whole poem and especially the last stanza, but I also love the personnified scarecrow. Please give him a cheery greeting and a big smile from me when you see him next. Owl |
