Chippino We can't 'ford no gas. We can't pay our bills. Me and my lady are headin' off to Phil's. All 'bout the gath'rin' of fish, friends, and brew. Knee high, we're a dredgin' to chip in for the stew. The place is a shambles just over on the beach where ol' Phil's a fixin' what local folk capiche. Some chip a squid. Some chip a crab. Some chip a shrimp. Some chip a dab of whatever else they have. Some chip a mussel. Some chip a clam. Some chip a scallop. Some chip a hand at just dredgin' through the sand... ...and Phil don't give a damn as long as night stays young and "Tu Vuò Fà L'Americano" plays on and on and on. Tu Vuò Fà L'Americano Though my wife and I visited Phil's for her birthday, this poem is based more on a deep desire to experience Italian community than on a real experience or a real place. "Tu vuò fà l'americano" = You want to do American |

I married an Italian woman from New York City and lived there for a few years. The Sunday dinners at "nonna's" was the highlight of the week. ~*~ If they give you ruled paper write sideways . . . ~*~ |

Thanks Jerry... Thankful to have brought back a few Sundays ago for ya!!! The place we visited had become way too commercialized, line way outside the door, but I so cherish the thought and tradition of everyone pitching in to form a sort of communal stew. |

Ah, thanks Victoria... Yeah, Italian has always been my favorite as well and, um, when I was a young boy, 8 or 9, my family all knew this also and, um, soooooo, on summer vacations, Grandmas, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, etc. etc. would all surprise me with bountiful plates of spaghetti at each and every home I visited. |

love the opening stanza --- Italian's good, I have to admit , but give me a good fried Cajun seafood platter any day of the week, and Cajun food in general. J. |

Thanks nakdthoughts (Maureen)... Yeah, it's a kinda like that, um, ol' Cioppino or "Chippino" as I've spelled it here. The word derives its meaning from all the Italian families chipping in to make one big pot of stew... Kinda reminds ya of "the blue pages" a bit doesn't it? Thanks for reading and, um, thanks for reading, and, again, thanks for chipping in your reply. |
