Once again the night is done, Vanquished by a new day's sun, Helios thrusting rays of light, Across land's scape, as ends the night. Chasing stars back into never, Beyond the far side of forever, The only darkness one may find, Are eboned shadows left behind. The soothing calm of night gives way, To the bustle of new day, As daytime creatures rise to greet, And creatures of the dark retreat. Farewell to night until once more, Night opens up high heaven's door, Letting in the Milky Way, When Helios sets, when ends the day. |

Tim, this is exquisitely beautiful. I read it 3 times and sank into it and pulled its covers around me in luxurious and peaceful comfort. The only thing that jarred a little for me, was the line: To the bustle of new day, because the rhythm in the rest of it was perfect. My humble suggestion would be something like: To the bustle of the newborn day. Ignore that if I am intruding. It makes a perfect companion poem to, and is in the same league as a very great favourite of mine - Longfellow's "The Day is Done." I hope you don't mind my posting that one here, for those who don't know it. Owl THE DAY IS DONE The day is done, and the darkness Falls from the wings of Night, As a feather is wafted downward From an eagle in his flight. I see the lights of the village Gleam through the rain and the mist, And a feeling of sadness comes o’er me, That my soul cannot resist. A feeling of sadness and longing, That is not akin to pain, And resembles sorrow only As the mist resembles the rain. Come, read to me some poem, Some simple heartfelt lay, That shall soothe this restless feeling, And banish the thoughts of day. Not from the grand old masters, Not from the bards sublime, Whose distant footsteps echo Through the corridors of Time. For, like strains of martial music, Their mighty thoughts suggest Life’s endless toil and endeavour; And tonight I long for rest. Read from some humbler poet, Whose songs gushed from his heart, As showers from the clouds of summer, Or tears from the eyelids start; Who through long days of labour, And nights devoid of ease, Still heard in his soul the music Of wonderful melodies. Such songs have power to quiet The restless pulse of care, And come like the benediction That follows after prayer. Then read from the treasured volume The poem of thy choice, And lend to the rhyme of the poet The beauty of thy voice. And the night shall be filled with music, And the cares that infest the day Shall fold their tents, like the Arabs, And as silently steal away. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow |

My dear Sir.... your poem reminds me of being a young child, and wanting to look beyond the blue of day into the black of night, for I knew the stars were still out there, waiting for me to discover them again. I think we miss that magic in our everyday thinking today.... I think you bring it back with majesty! |
