LAST LEAF OF SUMMER Autumn past, winter now, so deep so cold Horse chestnut fruit, another day to fight Fables of times long gone, by firelight told The fullest moon, on frosted fields to light And willow bare, where once its leaves did weep And on a branch a leaf still clinging there A memory precious in my heart to keep Do eyes reflect or sometimes only stare My thoughts of you to murmur on the breeze A snowflake falls its symmetry unique Can hearts turn cold just like a pond to freeze Neath silken gown, a fairy ring mystique Then like a dream the final leaf did fall On frozen ground to wait for spring to call |

Beautifully composed sonnet, Michlemas . . . That last leaf had borne winter's ice blast and spring, as they say, is just around the corner. ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

Michelmas, Welcome to Passions! Please do check your email for a Very Special Welcome! This poem has an Old World quality, and I believe I, for one, am going to enjoy your many offerings. Again, Welcome! "The business of the poet...is to show the sorriness underlying the grandest things and the grandeur underlying the sorriest things." Thomas Hardy |

Great writing, flavor of the experienced pen, very well done. In his mantle gray he walked one day across a shining floor and with crystal key in secrecy he opened an ivory door -J.R.R. Tolkien(T.Bombadil) |
