       Winter Preludes

I walk these dirty streets
of discontent and watch
the scraps of withered leaves
dance a November wind
in hints to all of journeys
  end.
Here in this dark place,
this empty space
of deep regrets,
I contemplate a broken
mandolin by cold Winter
  sunlight.
I shall die here unknown
some forlorn-grey afternoon,
no longer self-possessed,
pen in hand alone
when even the words have
  flown.

alone is not such a sad state
considering the quality of the company late,

and of course, the cost,
so nothing's lost,

in the reckoning.

I think the words will fly with you because they're in the mind and how can physical death kill something that isn't physical? However, you express so well what many of us can relate to. Well done!

Bruce, I hear your whispers of TS Eliot. Sadly, we all die alone, even if surrounded by loved ones, for those who have them. Perhaps that is even more difficult - leaving them . . .

Well I personally think you and your poetry matter.
Everything you ever wrote resonates with profound beauty.

I think how we perceive ourselves and our experiences in life depends on what lens we choose to look through.  it can get ugly if we let it, but I don't like looking through that lens myself.
