Ruins in the woods Nestled into meadows deep Where woodlands slumber into sleep’ This long forgotten pathway winds Now overgrown with summer vines A wall of stone in silence stands Dividing woods from nurtured land But crops no longer fill the slope With autumn grains and bits of hope Perhaps a man with dreams of gold Was cast within a farmer’s mold Perhaps he walked these woods one day And gathered thoughts along the way Amongst the briars thick with thorn Somehow a splendid dream was born A wall still marks the furrowed soil The pride, the hardship, love and toil The only sound, a gurgling stream A thousand shades of forest green And this stone wall, a silent shrine To dreams that seem a bit like mine Between the meadow and the trees A wall contains such mysteries A house unseen, a life unknown Have tumbled into piles of stone I pause to think my life some day Be strewn like stone along the way For I have dreams that beckon me And trekked through sharper thorns than he Elzabeth Santos |

I am reminded of my grandfather's log house he built alongside a body of water called Walker Creek, with a one-mule syrup mill and a shed for curing meat, he was hardscrabble, working before daybreak until after sundown. When he died the place went to ruin, nobody seemed to care very much for what he had worked very hard day after day feeling his wife and four daughters. Thank you, Elizabeth, for the memories. ~*~ If they give you ruled paper write sideways. ~*~ |

What a splendid piece of work this is. Mystical and powerful, and vividly portraying images reminiscent to our own life experiences, and what ruins yet remain. What a joy it is to read you again... Michael |
