And with that slamming jolt Of her hand overlaying mine A sincere token of comfort instantly engaged a three quarter ton human clutch that scraped my hard mind raw Time thickened as I tried to recoil. Knowing I could never reflect a fraction to her what had just appeared to me. Knowing I could not play fair! Her grip tightened my paralyzed limb "I was not created to play fair!" She whispered. "I was meant to take a hit!" "what did you see?" I was mute. I could not speak. I saw devotion, loyalty that generals in military nursing homes dreamed of as they wept in their beds. I saw mother cats backed against their kittens facing down coyotes realizing for the first time why they exist why they now feel real and crying out to God himself that this near perfect world lacks enough predators. They no longer expected to play fair I saw a frail little girl ravaged by fatal disease hold up her enormous fire fighting father limp and sobbing as he tried to walk the hospital halls he had finally lost hope for her. "I will carry you now Daddy!" A tiny bald forklift that proudly hoped her bones would crush Just to get the privilege to hold him upright. And I swear to you he never touched the ground. Her expression a furnace. She did not leave him to this world playing fair. I saw the battered and the bleeding woman shrug off black eyes and missing teeth and the scorn of the public for her "stupidity" for staying in such a situation. And I saw this beaten ballerina's bloody disciplined toes rummage for old truck keys against shattered dollar store glass. selflessly race to comfort and rescue the raging mentally ill child in a hulking mans body. Bailing him out and reassuring him with kisses mixed with loyalty tears and her dried blood all the while seeing peacock brilliant colors worth dying for in a majority's black and white world. these multiple cycles as natural to her as when she once jumped rope over and over again in the scorching sun On blistered little feet. Try as she might down to the atomic level. She was never designed to play fair. And I saw all of these things I could not understand ground against life's ugly dirt till it was a razor I dare not fully touch And I saw it in cold determined eyes that reflected my face across that aisle That made my vision tunnel That made my ears go dead That was promised to me alone Whether I lived in a soggy box or a mansion That could not be bought but only given And was engineered to its frame to get stronger when I failed. And just as she promised me 40 years ago when she took my hand and my tiny ring and voiced her simple vow through my stunned and awed expression "Boy, know only one truth from me when it comes to you I do not play fair!"
