three men sat at the bar I was the youngest one there I'm seventy-two bartender about the same age one of those kind of bars old-timers place to come for lies and whiskey we three have stopped talking six months ago suddenly realized we really had nothing to say we hadn't said a hundred times or more we were so hungry for conversation in those days we even lied about our lies so we stopped talking watched the door pounced on anyone we didn't know for conversation for lies this day was no different than all the lonely days before when in walks Heaven on two long, shapely legs skirt so short we were all waiting, tongues hanging from our mouths for when she sat down which she did at a table alongside the wall we watched her through the mirror behind the bar bartender ambled over to see what she wanted to drink we strained to hear her voice spoken so low we couldn't bartender told her he didn't know how to make that drink she said, white wine, then, please he brought the wine the three of us watched as she sipped it she knew we were watching her in that mirror she kept a small smile on her face she drink her wine, ordered another got up and walked toward the back where the restrooms were now that she was gone we avoided each others eyes as we stared toward the back where she disappeared behind the ladies room door watching and waiting for her to come back and give a little purpose to our humdrum lives ©February 2, 2012 / Jerry Pat Bolton ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

Years ago there was a bar down on Magazine St. pretty close to it's intersection with Jefferson Ave - a memory I hadn't thought of in years and years, much like the one in your piece. Mom lived, at the time, on Jefferson a block or so off magazine, and I was home on Leave from the Navy. Went into that bar one evening for a beer or two - Much like your description, except I was the "woman" (and tongues didn't hang out, but reading your piece, I could see everything else. Was one woman (old bar fly) there just like the men. Only time I ever went in ... didn't fit. I was 18. MUCH enjoyed the read, my friend. J. |

I bet I have been in that bar. There were some real skuzzy bars on Magazine Street back in the day. Thank you for stopping by and reading and commenting on "The Bar," j. ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

Ha! That may have been you in the stall next to me sighing with the pleasure of losing some beer ... at least that's what I assumed was happening (I quickly left). j. |
