She comes bearing a gift of sour dough bread, a loaf she made herself, along with a cheese spread. Soft-lit brown eyes pour a smile over me and I wonder if she really understands her beauty, a natural woman at nineteen, holding sun in her hands. She promises me an apricot scone, tomorrow. My mouth waters, delighted, but the true dessert moves in quickstep intelligence, encased in blue jeans and a faded tank top, to paint her tender heart into my afternoon for half an hour. "Look what I got my mom!" Her tone is clear. She holds a soft sage-colored ceramic mask depicting Sol against the light, New Orleans in her fingers ~ one abstract eye, like the sun I so often seek through the clouds on a misty day. In her right hand, she lifts a second piece, and the other eye assumes a hollow space. Sudden focus swallows me...any moment the gaze will become a lazer to empty me of secrets. Jassy commands. The mask lives! We go into the kitchen, cut the bread, frost it in cheese, and laugh as the afternoon gathers her adventures. Sunshine finally makes a debut in tow...Jassy, the pied piper, her song innate, and we laugh happily in the warmth. Fragrance lingers across the table. We finish our tea. She collects her treasure, kisses my cheek. I want to keep her, but how do you bind a sunbeam? In a moment's sashay across the lawn, she turns, a line dance spin, dark tendrils feathering against her neck in the rhythm. A wave, the flash of a grin, and she vanishes. I am aware of soft petals drinking in summer, and know, Not all my roses grow against the front porch. Tomorrow.... [This message has been edited by Klassy Lassy (07-20-2012 03:14 PM).] |

Aww, darn, Klassy Lassy, this is just one tear jerker. If I had to have had another stanza to read I have a feeling I would have given in to the wetness of the eyes. This is such a loveable piece of writing, besides, you couldn't go wrong when you brought in the fact that homemade sourdough bread was in the mix. My mouth is watering . . . ~*~ they give you ruled paper write sideways. ~*~ |

Jerry, I didn't mean to make your eyes well. Mine do it all the time, but there is a sweetness that smooths our rough edges unexpectedly sometimes, and the dams don't hold up too well. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts with me. ~Karen |

I have come to treasure a man who allows the strength of love and tenderness into his being. So many are disciplined in their youth, not to allow growth in that side of their souls. They battle emptiness for years. It's more than sweetness...it's what constitutes wholeness and it takes courage, to survive those lean years. |

I want to keep her, but how do you bind a sunbeam? What a blessing to have such a one in your life... She's an absolute delight... and so is this write! |
