When I first met her a moon crater shifted She was a country girl, simple and pure And she connected to the inner core of my heart. Lost my voice for a while, moved my thick tongue around in my mouth, until I could speak. Just eighteen we were and full of receptors Receptors from the tips of our toes to the top of our heads. Nothing had to be said, connections of that sort come down out of heaven somehow. Her lips were as rich as fresh strawberries and I kept seeking them in addiction to the helplessness of needing her day and night. Freckled face, light blond hair, no make-up, blue eyes like the summer sky. She was like the smell of fresh grass in the first mow of spring. When we came together in love the energy of the universe expanded then peacefully withdrew. The taste of her skin was like smooth silk of a lily petal. We fed off the magic of unexplainable desire coming together like comets in the night. The future was full of visions of happiness as over and over we would talk about the virtues of tomorrow. We married and the years slipped by quickly until we learned about the advantages of selfishness. Now she's gone, that absolute magic has gone back to the tempter that invented it. Now in the heat of a new set of problems I struggle to make the best of what can never replace that past I'm so mature I cry sometimes, just to celebrate how far I've come. If there is such a thing as forever, why has it abandoned me? true love never looks after it's own interests |

"I'm so mature I cry sometimes, " Yeah, that's progress, huh, Eric? First real love. Magic and you extolled that magic within the lines of your poem. The taste of her lips, nothing could ever taste as sweet and as rich as those lip. Her freckles, her body, the loving where everything just came together and you knew it would never, ever end. And then you got married. Eric, there is something about signing that marriage certificate that absolutely changes people. There is no two ways about it. I have seen it too many times and have participated in it myself. I have known people who lived together for ten-twelve years and longer and one day they decide to marry. Within five years both of them are hiring divorce lawyers. Happened to me. I lived with Dottie for about fifteen years. We got married. We didn't get a divorce, but we changed, and by the time Dorrie passed away February 2009 we hated each other and had been hating each other for a long time. Why didn't we get a divorce? I think we were just too old and too tired to go through the whole rigamarole. That's my take on it.--Jerry ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ [This message has been edited by JerryPat2 (07-01-2012 09:39 PM).] |

Eric, as soon as I was old enough to know what death is, I knew there was no such thing as "forever"...kinda like figuring out there's not really a Santa Claus... and I'm beginning to wonder if there's even such a thing as "tomorrow" it all goes by too fast fantastic writing here, my friend...glad I'm here to read you today ![]() |

Jerry, I know exactly what you mean and I've seen it happen many times too. It is a bit of a mystery but then so is much of life. However, I have seen it succeed as in the case of my daughter who is happily married after living with Mike for 5 years so I guess it's a hard one to figure from all angles. This is an emotional story from my past and time healed it. Today I am happily married and wouldn't change a thing but this is how I felt as a very young man. My advice as an older man - don't get married too young - wait until you're sure. However, I have seen many cases like yours after living for many years together. Yet, there's many who have succeeded and stayed together. I always appreciate your insightful comments. Eric true love never looks after it's own interests |

Karen Thank you for the lovely expressions of emotion. Yes, I'm very happily married now and it's been the best thing ever happened to me. Eric Dixie, you're right, it really does all go by too fast. I am using forever as the cliche it really is. You're kidding me right, there's no Santa Claus, aw c'mon, where will all men get their socks and ties??? Thanks for the real nice in depth comment I sure appreciate it. Eric true love never looks after it's own interests |

It's always sad when we realize there's no such thing as forever. A wonderfully expressive write, Eric, that does indeed draw the reader in - perhaps because we can all relate. Helen |

Reading this made me wonder... because I've always thought that forever abandoned me because I was the only one seeking it... but maybe that elusive little scoundrel left everyone mourning its departure. *S* Wonderful write! |

Wow, Eric... this is one powerful presentation. It was beautifully nostalgic, and heartrending all at the same time. There is such a thing as forever... It may just be a dream emotion carries itself toward. But some dreams are real, and even some we know aren't certainly have that feeling to them. I applaud the depth of feeling in this piece. I have noticed that the wild, crazy kind of love that one experiences when very young, is sometimes like a supernova. It burns so brightly, it burns itself out. Your poem says so much about the desires of the heart. Ida |

Thanks Michael. Yeah forever is something like that I'm sure. I do know it hits everyone right between the eyes and in the heart all at the same time. I appreciate the visit and the kind words. Eric Thanks Ida I appreciate the comments and wonder why it has to burn out at all, but then don't we all? Supernova is a good thought...... Eric true love never looks after it's own interests |

There is forever, but its nature, the experience of it, is not under our control. We control only the choices we make and the paths we walk. |

I much enjoyed this magical rendering of that overwhelming discovery of love, even though it ended. I believe eternity is perceived in the span of a perfect moment and in the echoes of our emotions. Wonderful writing, dear Eric. Margherita |

Margherita You have always been such an example for many of us when you read poetry. You perceptions are keen and refreshing and not like many that I know read quickly and then move on. Your friend Eric true love never looks after it's own interests |

Yes, that line, "I'm so mature I cry sometimes" allowed me a wry smile of understanding... This is painfully good, Eric, and just an FYI... all that you went through, that gal did, too. It's rare when the magic lasts. I know it exists... it was just never in my cards, no matter how close I held them. Maybe it was because I wanted it so very much, that I strangled it from the start. |

Karilea Thanks for the visit and comments. The mature line's when we finally realize the stark reality of some things. Yes, the girl went through the same loss and gain as I did. It's hard to hold on to the powerful passions that course through the veins of young lovers. I have seen embers of it burn with many many couples that have something special. However, I don't think you wanting such a desirable arrangement means you pushed the envelop too far, sometimes, it's just life. Thanks again Eric true love never looks after it's own interests |

Fine writing...unfortunately one persons forever can be only a season to another...speaking from experience, if we considered that person the one, the pain, loss, grief can last for what seems like forever...James |

Eric - As a species with a finite life span, we've never had 'forever'. We only have the 'now' to enjoy. Your words bring back memories and Kodak moments with a smile. Thanks for your poet's pen today. Namyh |

James, I thank you for your expressions. Yes, sometimes these emotions don't seem to line up for the same length of time. Eric Namyh It's true in this state of imperfection we don't have the ability to live forever. However, I was using "forever" as the romantic cliche that everyone's familiar with. For emphasis....smile.....besides the idea of forever is built into our thinking. I appreciate these comments of yours very much. Eric true love never looks after it's own interests |
