Society has come far Enlightened people we are. We are so polite that bad People are only a fad. Monsters who rape and who kill Have various childhood ills. If not for that, we now know He didn't have room to grow. Standing on a midnight street Doing his thing, not discrete. Taking in the bread for crack It’s a nice home life he lacks. Evidence on him is slack Soon he's out and selling smack. Tomorrow justice is done Now he's dead, the race is run. Mother puts kids in her car Shoves them in lake, so bizarre. For bad love she drown them all Seeks prison pen pal, just call. He's a pedophile, the slime Little boys make his world chime. Shameless when they do arrest Lawyer says he was depressed. There are those who do think love Can cure all problems thereof. We make nice-nice to tough thugs Punishment? We like to hug. Boys in school on killing spree They're blameless, it's you, it's me. Everyone must see the good They were so misunderstood. No, the boys were not to blame To them it was just a game. Evil people made the guns They're criminal, they're the ones. Girl has baby in restroom Throws it away, seals its doom. Back to party, has a ball Can't she hear her baby's call? She made a mistake we wail Why would you put her in jail? Fragile, she's just who she is, Goes on Oprah has pop quiz. We're politically correct Can't call anyone suspect. Might make him feel oh, so sad No, please do not make him mad. Will we learn from our mistakes Toss good intention in a lake? I fear not, we are so kind Hate to see bad guys confined. ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

Yep, but we keep making the same mistakes with the ones who give us all that pain. Lawyers. I almost hate them as much as I do some of the rapist and murderers. Thanks, Karen. ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

Jerry Many things contribute to the mess the world's in and I think the following is part of it. A strong contributing factor is the rapid technological and economic development in society during the 20th century. An article in the German newsmagazine Die Zeit stated that we live in a “dynamic epoch and not, as during former centuries, in a world characterized as being static.” The article explained that this has led to a system of market economy, which is based on competition and propelled by selfishness. “This selfishness,” the article continued, “could not be stopped by anything. In its wake grows the brutality that marks our daily life, as well as corruption, which in most countries has reached right up to the government. People think of themselves and the maximum gratification of their desires.” Sociologist Robert Wuthnow, of Princeton University, found through in-depth polling that Americans today are more focused on money than they were a generation ago. According to the study, “many Americans fear the yearning for money has overpowered other values like people’s respect for others, honesty at work and participation in their communities.” Greed in society has further increased because many business executives have granted themselves huge wage increases and lucrative retirement benefits while urging their employees to be moderate in their wage demands. “The problem with the pursuit of profit among business leaders is that their attitudes are infectious and that they lower the moral threshold among people in general,” observes Kjell Ove Nilsson, associate professor of ethics and theological director at the Christian Council of Sweden. “Of course, this has a devastating effect on morals—in society as well as on the personal level.” Great write Jerry you hit many nails on the head but it's all a hornet's nest of complication. I'm not upset 24/7 Eric, just every so often I sorta boil over. I am not a learned man, so I don't know what to make of the greed in connection with the pure, unadulterated brutality visited upon the victims of the world who undergo untold violence at the hands of husbands, fathers, rapists, murderers, and all gross injustices in between. Sorry, again, Eric, I don't compute greed as a viable factor in the meanness of the world, except maybe as a by-product. I know that greed is your go-to answer to many problems, but I just can't see it in the day-to-day violence I see around me and are reported on in newspapers, TV, etc. ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

Jerry To start off with, I wasn't implicating that you personally were upset 24/7. I was refering to all of us who are alarmed at things like you're describing in your verses by using the word "we". Also, 24/7 was a reference to the futility of being upset all the time by writing, "where will it put us?" My point is that selfishness and greed are at the root cause of the breakdown of the family unit which proven facts indicate lends itself to, engaging in vandalism, drug dealing, extortion, arson, and theft, delinquents have been directly targeting representatives of the State. Policemen, firemen, and public transportation workers, among others, are regularly subjected to violent aggression. All these things developing over the past several decades tie into the reason why the situations in your writing come to be. Why so much violence? Against the backdrop of the collapse of the family unit, it is a revolt against all that the authorities represent, and many sociologists make that point. Then on the other side of the coin there's youths feeling of being abandoned by the authorities and having no prospect of a meaningful future. The breakdown of the family unit has been at the beginning of the demise of every world power that has ever existed, historical facts, not just my thoughts. These acts of absolute lack of morality and respect for one's fellow man, come from that. Always steming from selfishness and greed rather than love and kindness needed to nurture the family into mental, physical and moral health. On the other hand I know that some of these people engaging in such detestable practises come from generations of being subject to mental illnes and the pressures that come from that. Don't ever be sorry, you're a smart guy. Have another burgundy, I'm buying...... Eric true love never looks after it's own interests |

Tipping a glass in your direction, Eric. You are correct about the breakdown of families being a major cause of the problem. I concede. ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

Mind if I join you? That was a great discussion. I agree completely. It is frustrating to watch the deterioration. it is like watching dominos fall. Lori |

Yeah, but the only thing falling, Lori, is this once proud country. Thank you for your input. ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

Read this yesterday, and did not have time to comment - but making time now. Just adding that I heard on the radio this morning as I was driving to work that one of the biggest things that is upsetting a lot of our kids is that WE are living longer, and eating right into their so-called "inheritances...." so this gives them a right to be upset? Far too much "entitlement thinking" going on, in my humble opinion. Good poem, great discussion and feedback! |

Wow, there's a ton I could say on this topic. I remember the good ol' days when school principals had paddles, and discipline wasn't a politically incorrect 4-letter world. A system, where everyone's a victim,(and if you don't like it, you're somehow the cause), is what we're left with. :/ Sukstobus I guess. Good write though. Michael |

Sigh. Karilea, that is a new one about living too long and eating into the little worms inheritance. It doesn't surprise me though. Many years ago when they made it lawful for children (I'm talking about children) to sue their parents, from that day on nothing has ever surprised me again. Thanks you for coming back to comment, it is appreciated. ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

Yeah, I remember those good old day also, Michael. These days teachers can go to bed with their students and it is just another ho-hum day. Uh, unless the teacher is male and student female. Seem it doesn't matter so much if it is reversed. Of course it DOES matter just as much, but . . . Thank you for being here. ~*~ If they give you lined paper, write sideways. ~*~ |

I'll take a glass of burgundy... and shake my head, in agreement, to the unfortunate truth in your words, JP! Ms. E |
