Saturday morning
After a trek between houses

To the basement floor
Of the Goodwill store
With my father

Who is on his way
To thirty years
In the steel mills of Gary

In what is for us
This new country
With bins of old clothes
Scratched and damaged toys
Piles of heavy plastic
RCA records

In a language
We now are both
Just learning

The words to
The Pledge of Allegiance
God Bless America

And Old Man River
