This is a repost. I enjoyed Klassy Lassy's poem about her new grandchild. My only child is now 36 and is pregnant and I am going to be a Grandad for the very first time so I'm really excited. Life is so precious we should never take it for granted. A Gift Left Behind The breath of spring was wild and free just after a winter's freeze and the colorful birds of the eastern region were singing with gracious ease. The river was blue like the clearing sky the waves in the breezes played. The soil of the land was moist and prime for seed in the month of May High on a hill a man stared from a field his drawn face character lined, he watched the Terns as they rolled and reeled on winds of familiar time. He drew waves of thought from the past into memories of a young man, whose true love had come to him fast like a child he'd asked for her hand. Beneath the starlit skies at night his arms held her beauty so fair Her golden hair in the soft moonlight left a vision beyond compare. But now her pleading voice filled his ears "move on," she cried, "move on." Her final calling had come that year and then she was ghastly gone. He recalled.... When the wagons creaked and the wheels squeaked and cedar rails marked the time when family dreams were everything and together was a frame of mind. Now a Cadillac rests by the old woodshed and the wagon rots in the barn and the old homestead where the children lived plays host to an old man's charms. Then into his thoughts broke a sweet sound to bring back the dead from the past across the field there came running abound a small curly haired lass. "Grandpa, Grandpa," was her jubuilant shout, "I've come to stay over the night!" and into his arms she jumped just about knocking him down with delight. Her small face cradled next to his neck he fought back the tears in his eyes. Out of his vision came life out of death in a gift that his love left behind. This is my neice lost to brain cancer at 7 years of age, a blow beyond imagination. |

Congratulations on being a granddad, my friend. One look at that sweet little girls face and I am mute for more words, except to say God, if He is there works with strange and horrible methods. My next book after the one I am writing now will try to understand why this can happen. . . . and the raven said, )!(%!~@~#&$ . . . |

Thanks Jerry There's no words but I thank you for the kind thoughts. Like I try to stress in the poem, the preciousness of life and how we should all treasure the time we have together. Money and material things all fall short of the gift of life. Granchildren give you a mellowed out look at the never ending cycle of life and love. Eric, Thank you so much for this dedication. Grandchildren are a very special part of life and I look back at my family and think how very blessed I have been. Little Nicholas is Great Grandbaby number 5! Last night, Christmas Eve, I watch my 18 yr-old-grandaughter cuddling him (they are cousins) as he slept against her shoulder. Tears came into my eyes. She might not have been here to do that having broken her neck in an accident on a four wheeler summer before last. She didn't know her C-7 vertebra had been broken until she broke it again when she was bucked off her horse last fall and had to be taken to Doernbecher's hospital in the city by ambulance. It healed very quickly and she does all the the things a normal 18 yr-old girl does, but she is a gift, and I realize each of them are!. Time is precious. I am very sorry for the loss of a beloved child. This is beatifully written. I'm very touched, knowing what a special light your grandchildren will be in your life. ~Karen |

Hi Karen You certainly have been blessed. That's quite a story. Fortunately your 18 year old grandaughter was able to heal and keep on with life. Very dangerous, anything to do with the spinal cord. It's great that you can sit back these days and love and care for them all. I was very close to the little girl in the picture so I'm stressing that something always comes along to replace these voids in life. Nothing ever replaces a lost loved one completely but it's a kindness when a new love comes along to ease the loss Like the old man in the poem, he still had that gift from the past and a new closeness to live for. It's just simply life, and there's some sad happenings along the way. However, I have been told via an ultrasound that it's going to be a boy. Hey! I'll take him fishing!! Love to you and take care Eric ain't doin nothin at all just answerin the call |

Eric, I am so thankful for the miracles in life and there are several in mine. And the child in your arms in that picture is a miracle, too. I can see the gift in her beautiful little face. Yes, you can take your new grandson fishing...heheheh. :bouncing: Thank you for sharing with me! ~K |

Once again, my big bear of a friend, your heart is showing... it's painful to write poems and stories such as these, but if and when you can help others get through difficult times, then you know you've done the right thing. Hug the babies tight... so that they might always remember love. |
