Christmas in the Soddy, 1874 That year of great extremes, both working hand to mouth Suffering blizzards from the north, and heat from the deep south She had counted chicken eggs, he had taken in the grain Both had prayed for clear skies, both had prayed for rain She had written of hard times, she wrote of good times too, She had penned all of their days, deep there in the woods While he worked so very hard, her hands were busy too When he finally sat to eat, she dished up hearty stew If she went out to hang the wash, he stood to stoke the fire She was his every and all, and he was her desire She had written of hard times, she wrote of good times too, Wrote of pheasant feathers found, deep there in the woods In June their plans were made for their Christmas day Pennies had been put aside, each had their little way She had sold her extra eggs, he swapped with neighbors too, Each stored away their pennies, with special gifts in view She had written of hard times, she wrote of good times too Wrote of the times they had lived, deep there in the woods Bits of thread, scraps of cloth, gifts that she would sew For each of their small children, for faces would then glow A dolly and a small wood horse, for he had carved away Oh yes, together, they looked forward to this Christmas Day She had written of hard times, she wrote of good times too Wrote of their hearts as they strived, deep there in the woods Then she took her writings, and sent them far away In exchange, a gift for him, on their Christmas Day And he had sold his carving, of an angel in high flight He looked forward to the gift he would give that very night After the Children had opened their gifts, When all was said and done Husband turned to Wife, each said, “Merry Christmas, my Dear One” For she had sold her writings, to purchase her love a knife He had sold his angel, a new pen for his dear wife Each had given of them selves, something the other held dear And the Magi smiled that night, for their love shone ever clear ~*~ ©Karilea Rilling Jungel 21 December 2001 slightly revised 16 December 2002 |

Doesn't get better than this. Anything else I could say is merely embellishment. I loved this poem penned from "deep there in the woods," Sunshine. Merry Christmas. . . . and the raven said, )!(%!~@~#&$ . . . |
