He sways in from the cold
bringing December to the kitchen

he wants his chocolate, hot
I help with sodden mittens

wet wool and knuckles of snow
attached like burrs of winter

as I unwrap the scarf, remove
the fleece-lined jacket

to release the exhausted boy
from his dripping defenses

nose and cheeks are poppies
on a field of blush

and nothing ever felt better
than two small hands

ice, but pressed against
my warming smile

Klassy: warms the cockles of my heart!
Coming in from the brittle cold, your arms the heat of home..WOW!

Great imagery. Lucky boy--to have such a mom. Thanks for sharing!

Reading your words brought back emotions from so many years/winters ago, when coming home meant true warmth and hugs from my own Mom.

Like all of your works, this too conveys the magic of your mastery, dear Poet!

Love,
Margherita

"nose and cheeks are poppies
on a field of blush" delightful lines, captured the tenderness beautifully. Fine writing, Amaryllis.

ever see that Campbell's soup commercial?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PdeGx1obvc

I really don't know why it came to mind, LOL, but, anyways, you're poem was much more warm and personal than the commercial.

enjoyed,

I loved this. Having six  children it lasted  through years it seems. I remember  holding their little hands under my arm pits to warm them up. LOL latearrival
