I had just received my paycheck. I was feeling pretty good.
My job is pretty tough but that's ok.
The long, hard hours are worth it when old Friday comes around
And I can feel my pocket full of pay.

At the store I saw a woman who was looking kinda  down.
Her face looked like she might break down in  tears.
I asked her what the problem was and she told me, in sobs,
She had no cash for cigarettes and beer.

Well, I felt sorry for her so I took a buck or two
And placed them very gently in her hand.
No doubt she felt quite fortunate for meeting someone who
Could realize her plight and understand.

Then I saw a fellow sitting on the curb side, looking down.
Who said he hadn't worked in quite a while.
Oh, he found jobs, once in  a while,  that didn't pay too much
But a man's got pride, he told me with a smile.

Well, I was blessed to have a job so I felt bad for him
A few bucks just might help to get him by.
He smiled and grabbed the money and then took off down the street
So grateful he forgot to say goodbye.

The lady on  the bus looked like she didn't have a friend.
She had three kids  that screamed incessantly.
She said they had no food to eat and she could not find work
Because she had come here, illegally.

The kids would have to eat and needed money for the school
And clothes to wear and so much other stuff.
I  peeled off a few bucks more and handed them to her
I felt bad that her life had been so rough.

My paycheck now had dwinded by  the charity I gave
But I felt good for helping others out.
I work hard for my money but am glad to lend a hand
For isn't that what life is all about?

When I got home I read the paper, so much bad news there.
General Motors really was a mess.
The bankers down on Wall Street were about to close their doors
And I was sympathetic to their stress.

So I sent  them all a buck or two to get them on their feet.
By now my paycheck just about was gone
But I'd been told it was my duty helping others out
So I'll just have to scrimp to carry on.

You think that I am silly to be doing all these things,
A simpleton or sucker without par?
And say you wouldn't do the foolish things you see me do?
Well, let me tell you, my good friends - you are.

This reminds me of a `Leave It To Beaver` episode that I once saw in which Beaver and his pal were in charge of the class cookie fund.  An older class mate duped the boys out of part of the fund by saying that he and his three kid sisters hadn`t eaten for a spell. --- The boys learnt that charity may be a good thing but that there were people out there who took advantage of do gooders.  They also learnt that they shouldn`t be giving out money that they didn`t have.

Ah, the joy of giving. I too am a victim. Perhaps its our selfishness that makes us give so much, just to get the feeling of doing something wonderful.
Its a love/hate relationship haha

Very astutely put, my friend, but at least in the marvelously witty rhyme it was by choice.

like Ron, I always wait till the end to see where your words are taking us...

speaking of wall street..they are all getting higher bonuses than previous years...because they don't want to lose such excellent talent...cough cough

wonderful how crime pays today in so many ways! I'd rather go back to the innocent days of "leave it to beaver" in many ways.

Ahhh...you and the good ol' boys...we have a neighbor who passes around a neighborhood "newspaper" on our Street's happenings. That can be a good thing. Sometime it is all about him...and his family, and classical/timely/current copies of cartoons that all might not come across.

But today? Well, he didn't parody you, but it was similar. Several of the neighbors who saw him out walking his dog went out to say, "put it in the paper, man!"

Being two weeks or so before the election? I hope he does it.

To often they only come for the loaves and fishes....

I've been reading some heavy poetry tonight.  As always you have a good point to make and write it expertly.

Like Nipsy Russell so appropiately said:

"Pro is the opposite of con
and that is plainly seen
If progress means to go forward
then what does congress mean?"

Oh the TAX MAN!!!
Remember the old Beatles tune??

Spot on!

It is not so much the tax I mind paying, it is all those loop holes I can't seem to find....ebm

I definitely remember the Beatle's Tax Man, Eric

Eusta, you don't understand...you need to have a lot of money to have loopholes, like the rich calling for higher taxes while they have their fortunes tucked away in trusts. The people who need the loopholes don't get 'em!

this whole political thing makes me sick

and if I got drunk and thought about it, I might just go off the deep end and move up to Canada...

but all in all, I'd rather be in America, even if it is messed up

Great piece here!
