woman of praying arrows

she was called the woman who dances then
back in seventy one, down at the garden fields
when she greeted strangers who were lost
and gave them smiles to hang from their bridles

she brought love in her belly as a freedom song
and gave her gifts to the great spirt in september
then she followed the tree man's trail long
even when the snows came and covered tracks

in ninty eight she was the woman of praying arrows
and she gave her voice to the dark earth
chanting the names of her brothers and children
and speaking them into the roses that grew

so they would be known by the eyes of heaven

It is simply beautiful and it resonates unexpectedly with me. Not your usual offering and I found it to be a delightful surprise. ebm
