His figure was tall like a willow tree. Strong like an ox, He stood along the sandy beach, His loud, heavy laugh could be heard From the Hills of Haifa down to the Dead Sea. His hair was black like the night But his eyes told the story of A light that blessed the people he knew, The rivers he crossed, And the family he loved. He was a man of character, of brevity, Of truth amongst a weary union of souls, He was a friend to many, a friend to my father. When they were together, they were alive, again. Their stories and laughter brought back the chills Of what it was like to be young, to be soldiers So young, so innocent, time never seemed to care But, as the days and years flew by, Those days of fighting, days of running to the hills to chat about another story were no longer there. Now you stand with your hands pasted along the cliffs of the sea. Your face and body resonate throughout the holy land, And with a smile, a loud laugh, your presence is felt Like the evening as the sun moves below the sea. Time has taken you too soon, but I will never forget you. Today I remember you, Avi. I thank you for bringing joy and love to not only your family, but to mine, as well. I dedicate this night to you. Lev le Lev, Aaynaim le ha yam = Heart to heart, eyes to the sea. |
