Santa’s Workshop

Santa’s workshop sits on an ice flo at 90 degrees north
And is surrounded by lose, floating pack ice
That has been melting all summer.
Outside, it is foggy and cold;
But inside, they have a magic stove.
Actually, it’s Old Roody’s nose,
The way it glows.
And how it works, nobody really knows.
They have two lists tacked to the back wall,
One for the naughty and one for the nice.
If your name is on the naughty list,
That isn’t very nice,
And if you are not on the naught list
Then you must be very nice.
Were it not for the light of Old Roody’s nose,
Why, they could never keep children, and big people, too,
From switching their names from list to list
Without anybody noticing.
One wonders how they ever managed, at the North Pole,
Without Old Roody and his glowing nose.
The sea ice is cracked and shifting,
But soon the ocean will begin to freeze again,
Arctic Night will come,
And the air will fill with falling, drifting snow.
And then they will sweep down upon the world,
To bring us hope that Life will be kinder next year
Than it has been this year.
Alaskans and Canadians will get him first,
Then, if he has time, he’ll do the rest of us.
Maybe he’ll even remember old me?

Merrily on we go.

That
