night is pure
no scudding clouds
no dirge of wind
only the hushed call of frogs
the soundlessness of snakes
sliding thorough grass

no sound of storms
but storms don’t always give warning

I sit alone
in the middle of my son’s house
at three in the morning
in the dark

materfamilias
protecting spirit

the red eyed dishwasher
swishes a middle of the night song
watches me
watching

still air holds me
grit stings my teeth

I feel my son in his bed
amidst hard memories
grown new to him
he sleeps to wake
and sleep again
holding the hand of his gentle wife
the sound in this room is too loud to hear

down the hall
I hear his tiny daughters dreaming
their breath smells of salt and apricots
firm straight limbs tangle in crosses
hearts pound at yet soft chest bones
the sound in this room hides in the future

this house bears fragile seed
timorous tendrils of possibility

it is a simple house
patient wooden floors
uncovered windows
green pears in a stoneware bowl
the red eyed dishwasher
swishing a middle of the night song

and me
materfamilias
protecting spirit

watching
waiting
to stitch closed
the edges of storms

for storms don’t always give warning

I am glad that they have you to watch over them - and I wish I was there to bring you a cup of tea.  We could watch together in silence, watching the red eye of the dishwasher, listening to its music - and sharing a watchful wait.

Thinking of you ~ loving your poetry.

This is refreshing.  It is nice how you can take a mundane topic and inject creativity and vigor into it.

lots of undercerrents in this... layers of the unsaid and the impending sense of storms....

well written ma'am.. a treat to read this morning such finely woven words.

My dear Lady Kate, I have had similar moments  like yours in my daughter's home during the middle of the night. You expressed those observances and thoughts exceedingly well.

May peace reign supreme and bless you all.

Love 'n a big hug,
Linda

Kate, anything you ever write, pounds and tiptoes with excellence, but this one, wow!!!  I dare you to better this one!  The undercurrents, the ambiance, the tremors, the calms, the love, the fears, the whispering, shouting beauty of it all – I am lost for words!

You have such a gift, for writing and for making one feel something tangible....from the heart.

It's such a pleasure to read you.

Thank you for reading the unsaid Cpat

Dear Linda Angel, it always brings me a feeling of peace and contentment to be the only one awake in my son’s house. I am not surprised you have had like moments. Big hugs to you.

You read it all perfectly Diana, but then, you always do. There is a quiet language we speak together.

Thank you so much Amaryllis… kind words from one whose poetry I admire.

Blues, you humble me. Thank you.

Good morning, Kate...

I sat with you through this one, in the noise of the silence, in the light of the darkness. Thank you for allowing me to do so, it was needed by my soul, and I felt closer to yours.

Night observations, often a good time to write poetry, if this came about by insomnia i hope you have more bouts of it, just so we can read great poetry like this, but not too much, sleep is important...rest for the sweet messenger...and dreams...oh yes dreams...thank you Lady...
