We wore the words unbuttoned along the margins
showing each other something of what lay beneath
Until she in tatted lace used grace to set the images aside
When forgetting to punctuate the end of sentences
And the adjectives describing places to travel
Unhooked the strapped verbs of her tongue

She liked to layer the veils she wore
So that when one paragraph was completed
I still wasn’t sure that I saw the nude of meanings
And was certain that my own adverbs simply hid
The curve of sounds on my lips and the indents
Left on my soul when she began

When the ink dried
We wrote footnotes to the phrases used
Tracing the origins back to papyrus and clay
then made up stories about how they came to be
From fairy tales and myths composed on vellum sighs
Before we smudged with fingertips the superscript
Of numbers marking referenced page

When we were finished she made a scroll of her favorites
And tied them with a ribbon saved from the dress
She had sewn with skilled allusions
Then closed the fastenings of her skirtish smile
As she tucked them into the place she stored her treasures

Later, she said, she would keep them in the lining of her gown
And wear the memories where no one could see
While I would turn the book over in my hands
To feel the quill of her
Again

my friend...it is good to see you..to read your offering. I understand about time and how things drag us away.. I've been gone off an on a number of times over the years and have no room to complain when someone has limited time and can't share as much here as I might like...

but.... if I were to act like a child..
I would stomp my foot now, and tell you, you are missed... and should be here!

many thanks..for such nice words.. and I am pleased you might spend some time that you've stolen to read, leaving them here.
