My youngest son is feeding the neighbor`s horse, over the old rail fence on this hay-sweet afternoon. A massive draft, all swollen muscle under the chamois skin.. it bends a regal head from the sky, with liquid eye and equine elegance. "Is this the way?" he lifts a hand of greens, palm-flat, and patient in the offering. The ashen velvet muzzle dwarfs his hand, and chuffs the greater part of the treat away, then gentle-soft, receives a small reward.. I breathe again, and time resumes it`s measure.. my youngest son, transported, only stares. [This message has been edited by Amaryllis (08-19-2010 03:56 AM).] |

lol, a good write! That is actually a trusting horse - I've met a few across fences that weren't nearly so. Carrots are cheap, if the neighbor doesn't mind. |

I want to thank all above, sincerely.. so wonderful to know this poem was read in the way I`d hoped, intended..! . Truly, there is 4-way trust going on, here.. trust the horse has in the human, trust my boy has in the horse, trust I must maintain that the horse will not harm him, and the cell-deep trust a child has in his Mother (that she is there, will keep hime safe.) . Love your take and how you conveyed that trust without any of your subjects saying a word. Goes to show, the eyes say so much and love comes in many forms. |

This is the style only the best of poets can pull off...and you have done it perfectly and with such simplicity. Bravo is simply not enough to convey what this poem deserves.. |

Amaryllis, this is lovely. I immediately got the 1st 3 trusts, especially yours and the horse’s. If this had been my darling horse, Flicka, now in Heaven for 8 years and 4 months (short of 7 days), I would have trusted my precious Flicka not to bite your son more than I would have trusted you not to bite your son. I know you will get my point and not thing that I think that you would EVER bite your son! Owl |

Flicka sounds like she was a remarkable horse! You were so fortunate to have had her! I can hear the horse's chuff see the boy's sweaty, dirt-streaked hand... and you didn't have to say that at all. Wonderful...and put a smile on this horse's face. |

My great granddaughter is only five and she loves horses. She seems to have been born with that interest and I find it quite interesting that she is a Sagittarius. Her parents recently took her for her first riding lesson. This lovely poem so reminds me of her. I'm saving it for her. Ida |

Ida, how darling to have a 5-yr old rider! You must be so proud of her. And I am touched that you`d want to save the poem for her... maybe she will enjoy once she`s a bit older. I know for myself, the `horse bug` bit, and bit hard, at only 4 or 5 also! But I never had the opportunities she has been given... she is a gifted, fortunate and well-loved gal, I can tell! .
