I had the opportunity to interview a dragon recently.
Needless to say, I was quite nervous in his proximity
Although he quite set out to charm me and rapidly succeeded.

I was not sure how to begin, would my questions make him angry?
So I asked "What subjects would you not care to discuss today?"
He snorted, which blew my hair all over and then smiled toothily.

Oh, I have no sore spots, you may ask me whatever you wish, my dear.
So carefully and tentatively, I asked "What is your favorite food?"
He chuckled and said, "I know where this question comes from"

"let me put your fears to rest, no self-respecting dragon eats humans today"
Startled, I asked "Why, legend has it that dragons have always eaten people?"
Yes, he replied, in the past that was quite true, but many things have changed.

In the old days, people were much more muscular, they worked hard and long.
Nowadays, people sit too much and have a tremendously high fat content.
We have to watch our cholesterol these days, too, so we limit ourselves to lean meats.

It was somewhat disheartening to learn that humans had become bad for dragons.
I did not know what to say so I sat quietly for a few minutes, then asked
"Well, what about the stories about your vast treasures?

Dragon chuckled and said, "sorry, another legend must bite the dust"
"These days, we keep our money in bonds and 401Ks, much safer from treasure hunters
And much more likely to grow, as well.  We do keep a few momentos around"

I was quite baffled at this point, dragons had become so much more human.
What did it say to humans?  Were we becoming more draconic?
I asked him for his opinion and he became quite silent for a span.

"No, humans are not becoming draconic," he replied, "I can't say what you are becoming"
"Aside from becoming so much softer physically, you have become harder emotionally,
to the point that perhaps you have developed dragon hide."

"But the flame that was man has dwindled now to a tiny candle-light
barely visible amidst the other lights in the world today. I really hate to say it,
but I feel that humans are becoming more like the dodo and will soon be extinct

"Aside from becoming so much softer physically, you have become harder emotionally,
to the point that perhaps you have developed dragon hide."

Now isn't that the truth!  We have become quite lazy, greedy, un-sharing, and uncaring.  Sadly, these traits are passed along and it will only bring into the world more like us I am afraid.

Well done.

Sad, but a good read.

Speaking with a dragon somehow reminds this reader of Siegfried, who having tasted the dragon's blood could temporarily understand the languages of the birds...

And humans getting "dragon scales" emotionally reminds me of Ionesco's Rhinoceros, ostensibly about people all around certain neighborhoods of Europe becoming Nazis between the World Wars, yet also applicable to today's situation in some ways.

Add in the humorous take on sedentary lifestyles---although these are not always completely the free choice of those concerned---and imho this is a winner. Hopefully, caring people do not go the way of the dodos.

There is truth in what you write about people become hard on the inside and soft on the outside.  How sad!

Captivating. Loved the draconic, which had me thinking, "maybe we're just more dragonistic."

A fine read. Thank you.
