Many promises I've heard,
and there were moments I have had
when I allowed myself belief
in the words, the words, the mad
rantings of gratuitous
baubles of exchange
for...what?
A momentary thrill.

Me, who had heard everything,
sharp eyes shadowed by the dreams
that died with each dawn sharp epee
revelations rouge
a smear of paint
to cover shame
for all I had become
and those
good things that I could have done
hammered at me 'till I screamed
into pillows I would fight:
a sentry does not sleep.

He, a Saint with appetite,
The Thinker trapped within the stone
whispered r.a.w. philosophies
and stunned me with reality--
he looked at me with clarity
and waited for me patiently
as one by one
I dropped the veils
a tough girl's cosmetology:
the scars, the languages
of grief--
the trappings of security
I'd donned the dirt to be alone--
I cursed him. Ran from him
and wept--he held me;
I pummeled his chest.

He stroked my hair, and when I flinched
he understood that damages
had been inflicted upon me.

He loves me, he loves...me

I trust

Forever changed?
I'm what I was
before I learned to take a punch
before I learned to take a dive.

He loves me.

And I'm still surprised.

that sharp eyed looking in and not flinching at what we are,, what we have done, what we have believed.... even if not your intent with the opening.... does resonate deep.....

such a nice piece to read this morning....
a pleasure, indeed.

That just proves there are some things you don't flinch from. A lovely read, thanks!

Man, Karen, if this isn't quite the visual...

As usual, another great piece from another great writer.

But s/he must get some rest, little one.
Hugging you for this...

salt
    water
         blood
the sea is all of me

      these
deposits
         muddied
with
   history
                shoals
             built

clenched corals of
              guilt

eternity is what
             she knows
                     breeding
clouds
          the patience of saints
                     it takes
       to
grow
              our masterpiece
