“I don’t understand the desire or need to sleep” my companion began as we sat with our breakfast on the low table between our chairs “it would seem too much like Death” He laughed uncontrollably at his own joke And I could not help but smile To see the old man had a sense of humor And did not take too seriously his own position I took the mug of tea that steamed by my plate And rolled it between my palms “One would not want to get too close to Death, now would they?” I offered as I looked over the rim at his eyes “Oh…” he offered back “Perhaps under the right circumstances it is a relief” and laughed softly to himself “Eat” he said “I must go tend to a bit of business and I would not disturb you for a while” I picked up a point of toast and chewed its crucnhy crust Not caring if I ate, but not wanting to neglect either The advice given by my companion “eat” he had said and I began to eat from the plate of memories I had brought downstairs with me Until I found myself sitting on the hearth Tracing lines within last nights ash I drew from the past The lines to demarcate where common paths led To the uncommon places we had shared Along the brother’s Grimm’s lands and through Alice’s reflecting lands, to OZ And yellow bricked songs of nights spent With hands clenched in fists so that Never let go, never let show, never let go Hid behind curtains of velvet words And along the margins of Narnia* Along the bed of ash I wrote ‘Pathways” then rose and returned to my now cold mug rolled it between my palms as I looked over the rim and charted my own path for the day First, to the myths of us and the maps they held And to the glyphs I might have scribed along the small of back As I charted out the meanings for dreams and explained How it was that Love brought me always closer To you, to remembering the ways, To lands we left behind • "Four references are found in Livy's History (10:10, 27:9,27:50, and 29:15)... ... • Tacitus's Annals (3:9).... Pliny the Elder's comment in Natural History about its unusual weather (it became drier in the rainy season).... • Pliny the Younger's letter to his mother-in-law, in which he mentions the excellence of the accommodations of her villa at Narnia , especially its beautiful baths. (They Stand Together, Macmillan, Collins, 1979, p. 171)." |
