I still recall the burning embers
Crimson coals that warmed our lives
And heavy laden iron shovels
As a mother’s soul survives

I could hear her footsteps shuffle
When winter winds would sting and bite
Descending into basement shadows
In the middle of the night

From the coal bin to the furnace
Lifting weight beyond her strength
To provide some warmth and comfort
For her babes at any length

I recall our bedroom windows
Covered with a glaze of ice
That melted in the morning hours
To validate her sacrifice

Never did her spirit falter
Never did her heart give way
Though her spine was frail and worn
And night brought forth a weary day

But now I understand her purpose
That my grateful heart extols
And her warmth and endless love
In crimson glow of burning coals
