Your misery, it is my misery,
your inconsolable lost eyes
under rubbles of living houses,
they are my eyes torn away from the light,
as dawn crushed by a selfish ocean,
your breath exhausted by the arrogance,
it is my breath which tries
to go away from some stone,
your hands grazed by the mutilated steel,
it is my hands which try
to grasp the resistant beams of the life.
Your misery, it is my misery,
your face covered with dusts,
it is my face which waits for
the return of the long-lasting constructions,
soothing kisses, shared bread,
Your prayers are my prayers
raised as poetic rites
on the meadows of a fickle world,
Your misery, it is my misery,
I wait that eyes extend beyond
dams and occasional distances,
I waits that breasts lift up themselves
as tidal wave on the possible abysses,
Your misery, it is my misery,
I wait that boats cross the ocean,
that ports open as clever books,
that airports deliver their medicines,
My heart trembles as the ground of haïti,
my blood pours in the innocent sea,
my naked brothers look at me immensely
since their island destroyed as a gaping sun.

Wow....This is touching and sad. I truly feel for the people of Haiti. I hope that they get all the help they can get and many prayer's for the ones still beneath earth and steel. As well for the injured, and famlies.

thanks ken for the comment, I know that words are easy and that Haiti need something else than words right now, I just have warm thoughts for these people and the drama they live...

Yann, this beautiful poem embraces your compassionate and very sincere heart and soul, and is a perfect tribute to whom you are. Whilst the people of Haiti need more than words too, they still need words . . . words such as yours, for these words are the epitome of humanity, and the essence and sustenance of the helpers who are actually there. Imagine the difference between those helpers being there for some self-serving purpose - and being there because they feel in their heart the compassionate and altruistic emotions expressed in your poem. There will be some for whom there is no physical and/or practical help - but such kindness as you have expressed in your poem, will carry them with as much peace as possible into the Hereafter. You breathe words and compassion into the hearts of the victims. Never underestimate the healing (or destruction) of words, even from across the other side of the world - but then, I know you don't.

Yo Yann,

This is very nice. There is an interesting and little known fact about Haiti and the United States. After Haiti's slave rebellion, and war for independence the French were so discouraged with the Western Hemisphere, that they agreed to sell the United States the Louisiana Purchase. This doubled the size of the United States. Haiti and the United States, as Vice President Biden says, are good friends and neighbors, and always have been.

Yann, I have wanted to write a poem on the Haiti earthquake, but I have been unable to adequately express the enormity of the devestqtion and loss of lives ~ nor the depth of my feelings ~ but you have done so with this poem. My tummy ~ and my heart ~ have ached since I first heard of the quake.
Your compassionate outpour has brought tears to my eyes.

I watched and participate in the "Hope For Haiti" telethon last night. To see that many high profile people drop what they were doing to raise money sure put my faith back in the human race. It is the repercussions of this disaster that troubles me, the secondary infections, disease, and trauma-ridden minds that need money long after those 2 hours are gone.

I felt your poem and I too feel their pain, especially the innocent children. Nature it seems is definitely in an uproar.
