Listening to every heart

Kansas Sight

To stand and gaze at prairie
just below your feet,
you feel the earth respire under you
a moving
viable
shift
of

life.

Close your eyes, and lift your head
then open lids
to cerulean sky
and white clouds that build
over you in
silence

so white, So White! Snow White blinding
and blink your irises so much so the
blue becomes a sapphire

jewel.

Close your eyes

and pull your face to face the horizon
and somehow,
someway,

the distance seems more remote
and you seem more isolated,
as a reachable horizon seems farther
than the sky.

At first there were no windbreaks

except for what grew along streams
and then, only scrub brush and
prairie roses gave
scent to the zephyrs,

and grasses were seven feet tall
where horses could hide;

then trees became a land-line for mine-line
and fenced in eyesight
and made the wind easier to hear.

I haven’t found it yet
that bit of say from someone from
before, that

one feels at first insignificant then
magnificent by the mere grace
of standing within such
grandeur

and I still have not yet given you
Kansas Sight.

The Kansas Tourism Commission should give you a job K.
This poem should make any person long to visit this place.

Sure wish I could blow with the tall grass and watch the sky with you, Sissie.  Know that I am from my spot on this earth.

it takes a word painter
to see the story behind the sometimes still

Ah, Sunshine...you have painted a beautiful portrait of my childhood. Mine was in Missouri but a rose by any other name...it's all part of God's country, after all.

Wow...what wonderful responses. Perhaps I have given you a glimpse of this little spot...

I have walked in the grasses looming high over my head...and have heard the barbed wire sing.

Come, visit again.
