Impression

A dead man’s cry, a wise man’s wrong;
Two sounds you’ll never match,
Whether in song or in a sigh,
They’re just not meant to catch.
But leave a chill they often will,
If you’re caught in their passing…
That wrenching tone of too well known
Regret slowly amassing.

For you know well, within your heart,
That melancholy essence…
Like a lost art, or private hell –
That isolated presence.
With eyes grown tired, ambition sired
Soon meets with devastation –
Slips from your hand, forever damned
By your own legislation.

Those rules you made to keep guarded,
Turned into your own prison.
As, discarded, sweet loved decayed
To a stir of derision.
Behind a wall, that chilling call
To govern your own sentence…
To stand or fall – to kneel and crawl
In your quest for repentance.

Until at last, in dying breath;
With all about you failing,
Greeted by death, you leave the past
To its own anguish, wailing…
And glide upon the structured dawn
Of liberated trust,
If from the grave, still yet a slave
To a cause believed just!

What’s left to say?  The world rife
With brutal disregard
Of human life you see each day,
While passing through the yard…
The Judas kiss, you know but this;
If but on self relying,
Upon a wind the angels tend,
You’re but a dead man crying.

Oh Michael, Michael, Michael...

how glad I am to have a grandson
who holds your name, although we
[you and I]
share no blood...I can only hope that
in some fine way, in some come what
may day, he might share your brilliance
for lexis, as I believe he might.

You make me remember my first few months
at PiP, when another fine writer's angst
drew me in so hard that I feared for his life...

I just couldn't imagine such darkness. But...
I have grown to realize that some people just
have to let it out, and let it be, that they might
in turn grow in light on their very own.

This then, is that very type of poetry upon
which I now can read without fear, because
I know very, very well, that if you didn't choose
life, you wouldn't be writing at all.

Merry Christmas, my dear Poet.

You continue to show us all we need to be
grateful for.

"The Judas kiss, you know but this;
If but on self relying,
Upon a wind the angels tend,
You’re but a dead man crying."

The impact of this is savored on the taste buds of thought.  Once again you make an impression, with "Impression".  Excellent read Michael.

It's that self-reliance and control that's the hardest (for me) to give up.  I know you know that about me as well as I know that about myself.  There is always something more to what you write, more layers, and the last two stanzas say it all for me.  Like a bright light.     I have to say though, when I read this I don't do it any justice; you reading it out loud however, yep...makes all the difference in the world.

I could easily drown in your incredible rhymes, breathing them instead of air... and your painful words provide the tears for complete immersion.

And then Sunshine's response?? If I hadn't already planned to put this into my library, I would be saving the thread for that!!

Until at last, in dying breath;
With all about you failing,
Greeted by death, you leave the past
To its own anguish, wailing…
And glide upon the structured dawn
Of liberated trust,
If from the grave, still yet a slave
To a cause believed just!

This leaves a chill, indeed... and makes me wish my arms were longer... Brilliant write!

K.,  I don’t think I have ever been paid as high a compliment as this.  That you know and understand I have to write this, when my only other choice is not to write at all, is a great comfort to me… and that you can read this without fear grants me an acceptance not many are capable of giving.  I thank you for that.  I am honored, not that your grandson holds my name, but that you look for similarities in him and I.  Know that if he never resembles me in any way, but holds just a tenth of your character, he will be a great man… not only in my eyes but the eyes of many.  I wish you the merriest of Christmases.

JL, thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed.

Dixie, You know what they say:  Practice makes perfect… Unfortunately I’ve had years to get it right.

Nicole, yep, you do have a stubborn streak not matched by many… but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  I admire you for all you manage to accomplish daily, but even moreso knowing that you have shared some of the darkness that has always stunted me.  You are an overcomer, and a inspiration to all around you.  I consider myself blessed to have you in my life.

Paul, I thank you, my friend.  I believe you know a thing or two about survival as well.  I wish you the happiest of holidays as well.

Ruth, your arms have always reached me, even in the most trying of times.  I thank you so much for that.

Merry Christmas to all of you,

Michael
