I have not forgotten the hold of his arm
my body grew into the curve of it
and I carry it with me

I have not forgotten
the way his boots hushed through the door
the scrape of his razor
the sweet of his voice
the smell of his despair

I have not forgotten the feel of his hands
rough and chipped as his favorite coffee cup
I went down beneath them
listened to them
whisper on my skin

I have not forgotten watching him
walk the outline of the earth
the inner and outer
alone
no longer able to touch love
no anchor to hold him

I have not forgotten how
he fell through the hole in his life

by the tips of my fingers
I hung over the solemn pit
afraid to hold on
afraid to let go
watching
soundless

I waited
till time became more usual than usual
and I let go

I no longer listen
for the hush of his boots
nor lean into the hold of his arm

and yet
times
when alone
I go down beneath his hands again
still
quiet
eyes round
and stone flat

Your words just took my breath away for their powerful evocation of a bond that can't be forgotten.

Dear Kate, poetess of rare talent, it's good to read you and to share in your emotions so intensely.

Love,
Margherita

I really enjoyed everything about this poem, but the first and last stanzas are my favorite.  Very captivating, in a quiet/hushed way.  Wonderful!

What to say about this wonderful poetry, Lady? What a presentation about life and the dangerous pitfall which abound in it. The complete love one can have for another are all too often destroyed by forces beyond their control. This is a very sad poem, but a very, very good one.

Kate,

This is blessedly awesome, and I don't say that lightly.

It brought to mind my mother, and father, as if you wrote for her, and I'm afraid I can't write much more, because those tears that don't come often, are thundering down my face just now.

Oh, thank you!
