Go Get That Dream

I'm drivin' a '69 Dodge down the road,
lookin' for a good place my heart can explode
staring at America looming through the window
searchin' for a friendly face I might know
yeah I counted up my hopes of yesterdays
and hit that motor, disappeared in a haze
rumblin' wild in that death machine...
oh... I'm gonna go n' get that dream

Turnin' up the radio blastin' Mitch Ryder
fumblin' with death and a Zippo lighter
from Fortress Detroit I ride till dawn's break
stumbled into Denver and I slam on the brakes
yeah I divided the Great Divide like stolen cash
burned these worn tires down to black ash
hit that storm like nothin' you ever seen...
man...I gotta go n' get that dream

I followed that dream,
got so hard, so mean
drunk on gasoline,
I'd get wrecked on anything
and I went down some ugly, snaking roads
and the devil was with me all the way, I know
he's waiting there for every man parched on hopes
lost souls danglin' at the end of their ropes
fools who follow tail lights up 'round the bend
but it just goes on and on, it ain't ever gonna end
and you're left lonely, lost and lean
but still I'll go out and get that dream
yeah, till the edge of the night,
oh I'm out of sight...

Well, I lost that Challenger today, baby
walkin' outta Vegas city limits begging
mistakes I made drown me in bitterness
but I counted up the change that I had left
yeah I called you twice then I split this scene
nothin' in the pockets of my faded blue jeans
just a picture of a girl I ain't ever seen...
Ohh...and it's for her that I'm gonna go get that dream.

Sounds like me many years ago . . . On the road, busted, thumbing, the whole bit. Saw America that way though, some of it I could have done without. Good poem, soul drifter.

I had a Tom Petty "Runnin' Down a Dream" flashback in your last stanza.  Never stop chasing yours.  A life without dream ain't no livin' at all.

Enjoyable read.
