On these high holy days,
you mention casually
with mocking cynics' lightest touch,
when you embrace them,
the structure they provide,
a warm and fluid cleansing of soul,
the chicken soup of life,

do you atone for me?
For shared frivolities,
dalliances of life and love
hopeless dreams,
hopeful fantasies
precious few realities;
when I am gone

should you atone for me?
Come out
come out
and play,
I make you beg
when I am lost
so far
down inside myself
I hear only echoes of empty worlds,
bedazzled and bemused
beyond the veils of time,

will you atone for me?
Your guilt is constant
soft and deep
nurturing while keeping you secure,
it moves you firmly like a wave
holds you gently in its curl,
sometimes
with its tide you can swim comfortably,
against it you would drown;
mine is full of vacillating high cold dusty winds
that I ignore
choosing to believe they're just treetop whispers
in a harmless summer breeze;
I live quietly,
in mindless empty forests of the self-deceived
with arrogance and fear balanced on a point of intellect
until some whimsy
or my spirit
draws me too far from the ground,
then,
when I'm ripped by ferocity
choked and pitted by debris,
spun in circles
a toy out of control,
tossed in crazy patterns by howling gothic winds,

do you atone for me?
When I no longer think intentionally,
when I see only dreams
chasing me through sleep
needlessly
reminding me of lives and loves and lies,
debts I can't forget,
when I only hear wind
and see faces in its folds,

can you atone for me?

Missed it before but I'm glad for the repost. Could be one of your best, imho.

Yeah, latearrival made me remember I wrote a short story about a sin eater. Tough stuff, ice, that's what make it so good.

Charly, I have only read this exquisite, eloquent, deep and sensitive poem twice so far.  I think I have understood it all, but will read it several times more to make sure and/or correct my understanding, after I have replied to it.

Nobody can atone for our sins, except Christ who has already done so.  He has atoned for all of our sins.  Please know that you are exquisitely, eloquently, deeply and sensitively loved by God, even if you don't feel His presence or His touch.  It is good to share with us that you don't, because perhaps in the sum total of the replies that you get, you will feel Him love you and touch you.  Even if that feeling is fleeting, it will be a moment of bliss, and every moment of our lives is priceless, especially such a one.  He who searches sincerely, will find.  May you find and bask in God's love for you.

Such a powerful, impressive, poetically outstanding offering, dear Charly!

I believe that we all atone for ourselves in the very moment when we become conscious of having hurt someone through our actions. In this, sometimes painful "awakening to the truth" we mend what needs mending.

I also believe that in prayer, as well as in thoughts of love, there is incredible powerful healing energy from which all those in need will no doubt profit.

Sometimes I meditate with others in so called "group meditations" and in those occasions we send out this energy of love and wrap the world into it and all the hearts who "are lost". No one is definitely "lost", of that I am sure.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to ponder ...

M
