Cassandra Danced Whiskey's amber fire, first of the night, splashed my throat like molten lava as I downed the double shot, grimaced, closed my eyes . . . ahhhh - it always purged whatever was stuck there. This time it was going to take more than that. A lot more. The thoughts weren't going to be washed away by a little burn, or catch in my breath. Not this time. "Fast Cars" on the jukebox for the third time, and Cassandra danced - slow jazz, viscous, easy flowing down her spine, sliding beneath the bareness of her feet. "Fast Cars", her fourth quarter in a row. Boilermaker! Beer and amber. Quick eraser. Soul smoother. Headache maker. Three in a row, fast as I can. Cassandra's quarter buys "Low Spark of High-heeled Boys" and her sinuous moves snake in rhythmic circles, just beyond my reaching hands. Morning. I remember the floor reaching out for me, hands stroking my face, fast cars, high-heeled boys, flesh on mine . . . Cassandra dancing on my chest. Whiskey's amber fire . . . C'mon bartender, set'em up like last night. And hey... here's some quarters - ask Cassandra, to dance ... © wesley james beard, jr. (revised) august 2011 |

Cassandra danced, indeed...but remember Apollo rendered her unbelievable, even when telling the truth. And this poem has many truths, said well, in the fashion of Bukowski and Ginsberg, to the tunes of Chapman, and Winwood.. Excellent poetry |

Ice - not sure about all of that, but I remember the way her body moved in front of that jukebox, and believe me water couldn't flow any easier. |

Margherita, Ida and JL ... thanks for your kindness . . . Blues, my friend . . . we're always coming from and going to somewhere - we can only hope it's a better place each time ... over the shoulder looks hint at course corrections - but only if we're Able to open our eyes and see. Something inherently hard in most of us. j. |

A beautiful poem, but a dangerous muse for me, as it makes me long for those dark cool oases where you can be alone with company, and a song was a mere quarter... Love this. I'll sigh and ice down some tea until that longing goes away. *smile* That's right. Karen's gonna go distract herself now. See what you did? hugs hun, thanks for sharing. |
