the seedling touched the soil struggled with unfamiliar elements suspicion and famine a burial ground of concluded hope alone forest floor germinated fragile seedling into a sprout the thinnest burst of life rose up as drops of rain manna from heaven fed the budding sapling into a form blissful sunbeams infiltrated the forest floor warming substance beauty of birth from this seedling a young tree grew stretching out feeling its way strong but resilient . . . bending to the will of its branches allowing tender leaves to nourish animal life insects, yea, all in need of sustenance the tree performs time-honored ritual though it took many years the tree towered over forest things majestic . . . proud . . . willing to give what it could to whoever or whatever was needful and there seemed to be more and more needful at every turn cracks finally appeared in its bark limbs stripped of leaves broken off falling onto the forest floor rotting Although strong, the tree fell on hard times because those it fed sheltered and loved wanted more much more than it could give forest animals and insects gnawed at its trunk mistreating the life-giving tree without regard for tomorrow when their shelter would vanish even as they stripped the tree of worth a rage set in because its limb were bare laying broken on the ground cursed the tree for not providing for all attacking it bringing it completely down laughing at its despair a stately tree fallen broken decaying alone those who used her for sustaining life took her limbs for greed deserted her when enemies came to call silence deafened the forest creatures watched in disbelief at their previous friend heretofore stalwart and strong now gasping its last rotting into earth from whence it came alone a screech owl screeched a deer barked then another answered it insects buzzed hogs rooted birds squawked a cacophony of mournful sounds as these creatures these animals searched for another tree to protect them feed them shade them as did the rotting one none were there the howling wail was biblical-like thunderous in their anguish but the tree was gone a tusked hog searched beneath what had been the tree found a lone acorn the last from the tree he ate it within a few days from the dung of the pig came a seedling [This message has been edited by JerryPat2 (08-05-2011 08:36 AM).] |

Thanks, Lori. It was pretty long, I wondered if anyone would stay with it until the end. I greatly appreciate that you did. ~ Man who fish in other man's well often catch crabs. ~ |

This is a wonderful write and I am so glad that a new seedling began its own circle of existence. And what a way of continuation! A great work, dear Jerry. Glad I came across it. Love, Margherita |

I thank you, Margherita, from rescuing this from the dustbin of mediocrity, haha, I do appreciate your kind thought about the poem. ~ Man who stands on toilet is high on pot. ~ |

A sad story, but the tree never lost its dignity, despite the actions of those who used it - they were the poorer for not seeing that. Owl |

The analogy of this is wonderful... you have a touch of Orwell in you, and that's a compliment. |
