Beneath The Hand Over Your Heart I walk along the beach following the line where sea meets sand. Shells scramble away from me on tiny crustacean legs, and waves recede, wind rushes by and away like breath trying to leave; and even the sand is disappearing - giving way to the gray of rock. I look back from where I'd come, find fog rushing in, obscuring the tracks of me, the line where sea meets sand, the trails of crustaceans that ran for their lives, all disappearing as if to say . . . No, there’s nothing left for you here. Nothing, you said, remains here – and beneath the hand over your heart . . . I die. Lovers come together, swap breath for breath consuming one another with passions fire; and then, one walks alone on a sandy beach turning to the gray of rock - where shells run away, waves ebb and flow, erasing a soul's imprint in the sand, and breath wants only to leave – because Nothing, you said, remains here – and beneath the hand over your heart . . .you said, I died. © w.james beard, jr. february 2005 - revised july 2011 |

Jimmy, You have a way of writing to my heart. I am always so happy to see that you have posted a poem. I don't know where you are going to take me, but I know that the journey is there and I am excited to go on it. Thank you. Alison |

I guess I'm once again standing with the ladies on this poem too and I ditto their praise. You write from the heart to the heart beautifully. Lori |

Yes, indeed, that is exactly how it can feel when the love goes away . . . Just kije death. ~ Forget the health food. I need all the preservatives I can get. ~ |

Ah, this is truly a beautifully crafted piece of work. Surreal-like in its ambiance, but reality pushes its way through to tell the tale of one person's quite marvelous discovery of the mind. ~ If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay you to do it. ~ |
