One night in bed, my missus said
“wake up, wake up my dear”,
“I’ve heard a sound, it’s all around
a buzzing I can hear.”
The light went on, the noise was gone
I said you must be dreaming
but she said “No, that isn’t so”
and then she started screaming.

“Oh save me dear, I’m white with fear“
her voice was all a quiver.
beneath the sheet, I heard her squeak
and felt her shake and shiver.
I looked around, but still no sound
then suddenly I froze
a mossy fly, had caught my eye
and landed on her nose.

Have no fear, your hero’s here
I’ll whack it with this slipper
I’ll squash that gnat, with one big splat
as flat as any kipper.
As great plans go, you ought to know
this really wasn’t good
as first surprise, was in her eyes
but then she saw the blood.

“You stupid pratt, you missed the gnat”
her face was red with anger
I’m sorry dear, I got quite near
but knew I’d dropped a clanger.
Just please sit still, and wait until
it comes back for it’s dinner
It’s best of three, and then we’ll see
just who ends up the winner.

To my surprise, her fear of flies
was very soon forgotten
she said “Your aim, is very lame”
and then she called it rotten.
If I was smart, then in my heart
I knew that I should run
as out of bed, she turned and said
“I’ll show you how it’s done”.

She reached her hand, onto the stand
and grabbed Lord Archers book
to my dismay, it came my way
and though I tried to duck.
Her aim was true, as straight it flew
that hefty book of prose
hit me full square, yes you guessed where
it landed on me nose.
