Steam Locomotive No. 844 It came roaring and steaming, boiler blown whistle wailing and screaming, a banshee ready to devour anything in its way. Four-hundred fifty-four tons of engine & tender black steel and water, no.5 oil, hotter than hell, Eighty inch drivers turning and turning, blurred to the eye. It passed so fast, in a minute or two, came from the distance, fairly flew, a wave from the cab and it was no more, no more. . . than the wind passing by. No.844 – glad to meet you, my friend. © wesley james beard, jr. march 2011 [This message has been edited by jwesley (04-08-2011 12:06 AM).] |

Ah, the monster that makes little boys eyes open wide, no matter if they are six, or sixty. Loved the poem. You nailed it. ~ If you don't want gays in the military, make the uniforms ugly. ~ [This message has been edited by JerryPat2 (04-07-2011 11:01 PM).] |

I had...HAD to read this aloud to meself in a brogue and it works PERFECTLY. Your words here are wonderful. LoL the sounds with one of those fine, large machines get a bit blurred at cruising speed, too! Fairly loved this write of yours... a privilege to relinquish the track to such. *tips hat* |

Excellent capture! Both photo and words...and both would have stood alone had you allowed...but both brought forth greatness! |

I am loving your poetry and pictures. The photos add another dimension to your work - and I am so impressed with your photographic eye. Great job, Jimmy. Please keep these coming. Alison |

Thank you all for your very nice comments. This was an awesome engine! I was maybe 20 yards off the track when it went by (and this picture was taken)at about 50, 60 miles an hour and it nearly blew me away. If interested in the train's history ( the last of it's kind built): http://www.up.com/aboutup/special_trains/steam/locomotives/844.shtml j. |
